Did they confirm there was one? I've only ever see Monty say in an interview that the characters are still in the process of learning about themselves and who they are, so that if a character does end up LGBT, it'll be through a process of learning and self-discovery and therefore they'll have earned it.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

They said it was possible, not to play "spot the queer".

What they said. People decided that that meant that there was at least one LGBT character, but that isn't what they actually said.

Well it would be pretty mean to say that and never put any in.

Both of these seem hilarious and a tad offensive.

I faintly recall someone posting about an interview with the RWBY team here, and a lot of controversy about "queerbaiting". At least, I thought it was said that they would have a queer character somewhere. Damn my eggshell memory.

[up][up]I would think it pretty funny, but I'm certain Rooster Teeth would never consider risking the PR disaster.

Quuerbaiting can be an actual thing, but I've become greatly desensitized to it after seeing dozens of posts using it to describe people's pet queer ship not becoming canon, evidence be damned.

It means a piece of media that includes hints and teases of a queer relationship, but without ever actually coming out and making it canon, presumably to get some of that LGBT Fanbase and Yuri/Yaoi fan points. An oft-cited example (though I can't really comment on its veracity) is BBC's Sherlock, with Holmes and Watson.

My problem with Sherlock isn't that Holmes and Watson didn't get together despite Ho Yay, it's that the actors made fun of the entire idea. Martin Freeman can be homophobic if you get him talking.

Torchwick didn't kill anybody.

  • All of those cars on the bridge were holograms.
  • Citizens have Aura, it's doubtful a random Deception attack would kill them.
  • Those cars were all remote-controlled taxi vehicles, nobody was actually in them if you look closely.
  • They were wished back with the Dragonballs off-screen. Ozpin explicitly states this in the following episode.

Mercury is still the reigning champ with a total human kill count of 1.

@Soble: I think I remember which interview it was discussed in (I think it was the first ever interview I saw), so I can dig out the exact quote when I've got time to rewatch it. I did see the outcry it caused - the outcry bore no relation to what the team actually said in the first place.

It's the second Afterbuzz interview with Monty, and the question is asked at 49:19 (towards the end of the hour). The quote is (more or less) as follows:

The question is whether there will be any LGBT characters on the show.

"Sure. Absolutely. The best part about that is, you know, maybe they're there now because they're kids, so we're on a path to help them discover themselves... so, I mean, I don't think we even need to make that decision right away because as we write these characters we learn about them and kind of help them figure themselves out. They're very real to us so, you know, we're definitely not opposed to it. A lot of us are for it even, like I have some cast members and some crew members who are, like, this would be really cool. But, the thing is, we can't just shove it out there. It just, it has to be earned which is the better way to do it. And a lot of these characters, we try to look at them outside of their gender so we just will want to do what's natural for them at best."

So Mortal Kombat X came out with a new character trailer of the Briggs family (It goes without saying that it's gory as hell so NSFW), and Jaqueline Briggs, Jax's daughter, happens to be a boxer with Shotgun Gauntlets. Although I don't think it was an intentional shout out. That said, Monty did do work for Midway back in the day.

On a related note, I would find it fun if they got Ed Boon to do a cameo voice as say, a White Fang Assassin wearing a mask.

A corpse should be left well enough alone...

Watched Volume 2 again.

So I realized...

There's literally no meaningful purpose for the existence of Team CFVY. If they never appeared in the volume, there would have been no difference whatsoever other than whining fans of Velvet.

Damn you all, Velvet fans!

Miniguns are innately meaningful

I can think of one meaningful use for Team CFVY.

If Team CFVY are the academy star team, they would be the role-model team all teams should aspire to match/surpass. They are the bar Ruby's year group should be aiming for, the student mentors that can guide them when they don't want to involve teachers, and a foreshadow to the audience of what the first-years should be achieving in later academy years.

As the academy star team and role-models, I can see Team CFVY having a potentially important role and, even better, it would also allow their screen time to be sensibly restricted but meaningful when they appear.

They did at least give us an indication of the level older students are expected to be functioning at, and we would still expect the teachers to be even more powerful again. So, they did serve the purpose of offering us a ladder of development towards whatever rung someone like Ozpin stands on.

I bet this won't be their role, however.

I'm a bit more curious to see veteran, older hunters outside of Beacon or any other academies.

Heh, perhaps the OC contest would also involve that?

[up][up] Problem with that is that Velvet was introduced as being bullied by a freshman. Kinda ruins the idea.
