Well, let me ask you this one thing: Does the English version have Yang cry out "Ora ora ora!" when punching things? No? I rest my case.

Also, Weiss calling Winter onee-sama.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.

...well then.

For those that don't know moonrunes and are too lazy to Google Translate it, we're getting the official RWBY novel, with an original story placed between Vol. 1 and 2. Teams RWBY and JNPR are off to spend their summer holidays on the resort island.

So yeah, we're finally getting a beach "episode".

Also, a bigger version of the cover art. The inflatable versions of weapons are a nice touch.

Why is the Beach Episode in a book?

Like one of the main reasons for a Beach Episode is to have fanservice, and that's kind of lost when you lack visuals. Not that I'm asking for fanservice, it's just that what they're doing doesn't make sense to me.

I also don't see that plot carrying a book (short or otherwise) unless a lot of weird shenanigans happen.

It's probably a light novel so there'll be a few pictures.

Is it me or is Blake wearing more on the beach than she wears for Volume 1?

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up]Compare Blake on the cover art to Blake's Volume 1 appearance and she has less clothes (that are more form fitting) on the cover art.

My point, really, is that her swimsuit looks more demure than her clothing in Volume 1, which makes her look like a bad prostitute stereotype. Her Volume 1 cover art was basically dominatrix.

Yes, I do loathe her original style. Her Intruder and Volume 4 outfits were a vast improvement.

EDIT: Because boy did this post need some revision.

It still weirds me out how, in a show where the lore and the creators emphasize how important colors and symbols are, where characters are linked to other characters aesthetically (as seen with Blake and Weiss's family, Yang and Taiyang, Ren and his parents as well), and where visuals seem to be the most important and celebrated part of the show...

...that the main female lead takes more inspiration from her uncle than she does her own father. It kind of sends the opposite message when Taiyang is clearly Ruby's father, but she interacts with him less and has few similarities, versus Yang who absolutely does.

That's just a bizarre coincidence. (Then again, I suppose it's also weird how in a world where self-expression and creativity are emphasized, you'd have children who take highly after their parents wardrobe-wise)

I feel like, combined with Taiyang not really being in the scene when Ruby is talking to her mom:

  • Taiyang only sharing a single scene with her in the series thus far
  • Ruby's description of him ranging from "I know what it's like to have an overprotective dad" to "you know, my dad is... a person sharing my DNA who happens to be in the same house as me"
  • Qrow being the one to give Ruby an exposition speech at the end of Volume 3
  • And Ruby leaving without saying a word to him

I feel like it's all supposed to say that they aren't really close, and that maybe Ruby's emotional wounds run deeper than it would appear.

I doubt they'd go doubt that direction with Ruby.

But then, Volume 4 has a bunch of scenes where the importance of mending relationships/the importance of hanging onto them/the tragedy of losing them is emphasized. Ruby is the only one of the 4 besides Weiss, who clearly has an abusive father, who doesn't get any sort of reconciliation with her parent.

[up] Possibly factoring into this that, biologically, Qrow is Yang's uncle, but has no blood connection to Ruby. Yet Ruby and Qrow seem to be the closer pair. Though interaction in any case is hampered by circumstance. Taiyang has mostly been shown in scenes at home, and Yang spent more time there than Ruby since Yang needed time to convalesce and recover. That said, arguing with or convincing Taiyang to let her go is a missed opportunity.

[up][up] Well, we should bear in mind that freedom of choice includes the freedom to be inspired more by others than one's own parents. [up] The fact that Taiyang appears to be the last of Team STRQ to activate suggests to me that he's the one that will be the most visually impressive of all the remaining team mates. I think we're going to end up learning that he has something the rest of the team doesn't have. After all, every member of the team seems intimately connected to Ozpin's long-term goals except Taiyang... which means he probably has one of the most startling roles of all.

The biggest things that interest me about the Ruby/Qrow symbolism:

  1. Qrow's eyes are not the same colour as Raven's: Raven has vivid red eyes, but Qrow's are the shade you'd expect for something that's mid-way between grey(/silver) and red.
    • It's hard to tell the difference between grey and silver eyes, so it's hard to be certain whether the grey in Qrow's eyes represent grey or silver; my suspicion is silver, given the Ruby overlap. I'm therefore guessing that Raven and Qrow were the children of a silver-eyed parent and a red-eyed parent: Qrow is a mixture of the two parents, whereas Raven either takes after the red-eyed parent, or has an eye-colour flip like Yang does, flipping between red eyes and silver eyes.
    • We have seen Qrow's eyes start to change colour — there was the weird silver flash when Winter hit him in the face, and then when he was semi-conscious during the Nuckelavee fight, his eyes were - very briefly - white; as in the same clear white Neo's eyes turned when she saw Raven.
  2. Cross motif: Ruby shares Qrow's cross motif. The only other character who wears a cross that we know of is Ozpin (the cross broach at his neck). We know there's a very close relationship between Ozpin and Qrow (and, it's implied, Raven): Qrow, Raven and Ozpin share the gears motif (Ozpin is the gears, and Qrow and Raven are the two eyes of the gears - Qrow is the left eye and Raven is the right eye).
    • The cross will mean something Ruby doesn't yet know, but it'll turn out to be completely appropriate (eventually) that she's wearing the cross motif of Ozpin and Qrow (and there will probably be a reason why Qrow wears his cross at an angle — probably something to do with his feelings about his Semblance).
    • Salem said the second eye has been blinded when Tyrian told her Qrow had been neutralised. The eye motifs of Qrow and Raven are the obvious connection. Ozpin has the gears motif; the twins have Ozpin's motif turned into eyes (Qrow has the left eye and Raven has the right eye). Salem clearly thinks Raven is already neutralised given her comment to Tyrian, which to my mind is further indication that Raven's very deep under cover for Ozpin and is playing some role Qrow is not 100% in the loop about (although he appears to know enough to realise she knows where the Spring Maiden is).
    • The idea of Ozpin being 'one-eyed' (as Salem seemed to view it) fits with the Odin motif that he has going on. Odin sacrificed his one eye to achieve great power and wisdom. This fits with my theory that Ozpin has 'sacrificed' Raven to achieve something, so Raven maintains that apparent separation to further Ozpin's plans. Or, as I tend to word it, she's 'deep cover'.

Note about Qrow/Raven eye motifs: we could argue which eye is for which twin. The way I look at the motifs is from the point of view of them staring at me. That would give Qrow the left eye and Raven the right eye. However, if you view the motifs as your (Ozpin's) eyes staring out at the world, it would be the other way around: Qrow's the right eye and Raven's the left eye. I thought I'd explain that, given that there are two ways of looking at which twin has which eye. I prefer the idea of Qrow being the left eye because he's raked in all the 'bad luck' symbolism, so why not toss the 'left-handedness equals cursed' symbolism on top of it? Besides, the popular view of Odin's sacrifice is that he sacrificed his right eye to gain power and wisdom, which would make Raven the right eye and Qrow the left.

Yeah is not surprising a lot of people think qrow is her father, not just considering how she react to him but also the other way around: qrow seen softer around her and is less way of a dick, compare his treatment to Yang calling her crazy to how he explain the silver eyes myth to Ruby, he come Almost....paternal.

I get the feeling Qrow take care of Ruby because of guit and that is relationship with Summer was deep know to haunt him until now
