Because Shonen is a demographic primarily for children, idealism and friendship always works out in the end.

Nothing wrong with idealism and friendship.

Also, there's this thing in manga where people bickering is a sign of them getting along... which probably goes a long way to explaining most manga relationships, now that I think about it.

Why do you think Belligerent Sexual Tension and Foe Yay Shipping are such a popular tropes.

Anime has brainwashed us into believing animosity means we wanna shag each other.

Nah, I think they are popular tropes because people already believe that.

It probably makes more sense in a society more focused on politeness and formalities. If you really hated someone you wouldn't be openly rude to them, because that just reflects poorly on you as a rude person. You'd instead politely excuse yourself and make excuses to never see them again. Bickering implies that you're close enough to someone to not care about how they or others see you.

Belligerent Sexual Tension and the like are definitely real things but they're unlikely to result in healthy, lasting relationships, like they usually do in mangaland.

That's the funny part, you usually don't see couples like that past the point they hook up to see how their relationship progresses.

Its actually older than we think too because I recall some old plays using that trope too.

I think the archetypal example is Beatrice and Benedick from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. That example is interesting, because they're portrayed as knowing each other much better and having a much more solid relationship than the traditionally lovey-dovey couple they're contrasted with.

That's probably why the "belligerent" part of the relationship works; they understand each other enough to not get under each other's skins as easily.

That actually makes a lot of sense and why most couples who fit that bill are rare.

Well its a fact that you can tell how close two people are by how rude they can be toward each other without taking offense.

Call a guy you barely know a shithead and those are figthing wods. Call your best friend a shithead and he'll won't even register you didn't use his name.

From why Soma considers Hayama a friend.

And we somehow got to talk about sexual relationships from that.....hmmmmmmm.

Anyway, I don't think Soma actually considers Hayama a friend...its kinda like his relationship with Erina before she came around except its not Played for Laughs. Hell, the previous chapter even referred to Hayama as his Arch-Enemy.

Actually, Souma not considering him a friend would probably explain the disgust. He still respects Hayama, but if he doesn't particularly like him his reaction is kind of like 'You're my rival and gave me the one solid defeat that I can't chalk up to inexperience or anything else and now you're sitting here moping because of your own cowardice? Pathetic.'

He's still respected, though, so Souma is above taking advantage of the situation that way.

Well, it's easy to see why finding out that the guy who beat him is actually such a pathetic loser would piss Souma off. It reflects badly on him as well.

Exactly, Hayama could have easily defended Shiomi's Seminar if he had the balls, but he decided to just fold over and let Central coerce him while Soma bet everything to defend Polar Star and take the fight to Central itself.

You can respect someone without actually liking them.

I can't get too mad at Hayama. You can look at it as cowardly, but Azami was also holding all their research hostage. You could see the logic; he wouldn't want both his and Jun's dfforts to go to waste.

That might be because I really like Hayama though. It might be mostly because of his gimmick, which is no contest my favorite in the whole series; strong, aromatic spice blends, and curry are the best.

I can see why he did it, its the most pragmatic option to take...but this is Shonen and being reckless is praised more than being pragmatic and hence "a coward"

And wat, someone ''likes" Hayama? I thought people were either indifferent or despised his guts :V

My tastes are shit bae.

His schtick is a huge part of it, his warmer moments with Jun are sweet, and I didn't mind Soma taking a loss at the Elections. Then again, I had the blessing of reading it in full, in one go.

He really does get a lot more flak than I generally expect; usually the brooding Shonen rival are at worst boring but I haven't seen so much distaste for one since Sasuske and the worst thing I can really say about Hayama is that he's kind of a dick.

That hasn't even happened in awhile and every time it was brought up it was actually relevant. You might as well ask people not to bring up Erina's tongue but Erina's cool so apparently it's not the same thing. Honestly, Shlugo, you always come off as unreasonably petty when it comes to him. Like, I get not liking him, but you seem to actively try to hate anything involving him.

As for the seminar...eh, I get it. Saving the seminar doesn't actually mean much if they lose everything they've been trying to get out of it for years.

Honestly, I'd prefer it if Soma wasn't shown to be completely right about this, but being Shonen, that's unlikely.
