I'd give Tchaikovsky a listen.
I want to do this from the start; which I believe, would be classical music, right?
Actually, I think this would be a more appropriate place to start. Oldest surviving example of a complete musical composition.

Regarding classical music, let me see...despite the obvious ones (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and so forth) I suggest Debussy, Stravinsky, Lizst, Gershwin, and maybe Stockhausen (yes, it's Electronic stuff, but he's a classically trained composer first and foremost).
For modern music, it's usually albums that influence the music scene. Here are some important ones:
- Grunge: Nevermind, Dirt
- Industrial: The Pleasure Principle, Pretty Hate Machine
- Electropop revival: Witching Hour, The Fame Monster
- Post-punk revival: Hot Fuss
EDIT: I don't think I fully read your post. You're wanting to go in order of development? Starting from classical? Shiiiit, that'll take a while to get to what I mentioned.

Regarding modern classical:
"Rothko Chapel" - Morton Feldman "Rites Of Spring" - Igor Stravinsky "Music For 14 Musicians" - Steve Reich
and waaayyyy more I've yet to think of but the above are a good start
yeah man lowercase
Alright, so I need help; with a big project. A big music project.
Basically, I want to listen to the most influential music, generation by generation, album by album. From the classical era to pop punk, from the blues to whatever. This is my attempt to widen my musical taste, and to also witness the evolution of the music industry.
What I'm thinking is, to do this, we'll tackle this by having me listen to the most important, most influential music. I'd like to restrict it to the bare minimum, but I'll listen to as much as I can.
I want to do this from the start; which I believe, would be classical music, right? Which I know nothing about, so I'm depending entirely on y'alls input here. >__>
So, where do I start for classical? Also, if you guys want, you can follow along with me, and we can discuss the genres!
