Laptop Charger Not Working

So here's the scenario. The previous laptop charger (not the original, of course *

) was taken out of action by the pet rabbit, who repeatedly bit through the wire multiple times until it was exposed. Basically, it was a lost cause and an electric hazard.

I exchanged it for free at the electronics store I bought it at, because it was still under warranty.

So I opened the package, picked the compatible plug, plugged the entire thing is...and it's not charging.

I left it plugged in overnight. Still not charging.

It's an universal charger, because the brand kind is way too expensive. $90. I can buy three of the current charger and still have some money left over. And there's still the risk of one of my siblings being careless again and the pet rabbit breaking it and frankly, I rather lose three $25 chargers than a $90 one.

The same problem happened with the previous charger, since it initially not worked right out of the box except it started working an hour later, except that it's still not working. I'm not sure if this is a common problem or not.

The green light on the charger box is on, which means that there is electricity flowing between the outlet and through the first wire, so the problem must be between the charger box and the attachable plug. Except I know that the plug is compatible, and it's the only one in the kit that fits.

So does anyone know what's the problem is? Is it with the charger, or with the laptop? Does it require lots and lots of fiddling? Should I attempt mixing and matching with the old, old charger, with the slim chance that it might work?

If I need to provide more details, feel free to ask.

Sounds to me like the problem may be that your laptop battery may not be taking the charge, rather than the charger not working.

Try plugging it in without the battery in the laptop. If it turns on like that but it doesn't charge the battery when it is in, the battery is likely your problem. Maybe see, since it's a universal charger, if it charges any other laptops (like, see if it works on a laptop belonging to a friend, parent, etc.).

Went to the store today and went to the clinic.

Apparently the charger wasn't working, and the laptop could charge with another charger. The guy who helped Dad and I suggested a charger with a higher wattage. We exchanged the old charger, got a new one, and paid the difference.

Plugged in the new charger to the laptop. Charger not charging.

It makes absolutely no sense.

Sometimes laptops require proprietary chargers and won't charge with the universal ones (Dell is particularly bad about it), mostly to help prevent people from blowing out stuff with an incorrect voltage.

Why not get in touch with the manufacturer?

May not be the charger at all. It may be the socket that the charger plug goes into on the laptop itself. The easiest way to confirm that would be to use a charger you know is working, preferably a branded one at the computer store, with your laptop and see if that actually charges a known working battery on your laptop.

If that step fails, there is pretty much definitely a problem with the laptop's charging circuitry.

Actually, yeah, have you brought your computer to a specialist to get that checked out? I remember several years ago I had the same issue and it turned out to be my socket, not any charger. It turned out to be cheaper to get a new laptop than to fix it, though, so be aware that that is a very real possibility.

Then how could the person at the troubleshooting clinic get a charge with his charger? It was an universial one too, and he got the laptop working several seconds after plugging it in.

While both chargers I got don't work?

Was that just a lucky fluke on his part? Or am I just buying defective chargers?

(Or the universial charger that got chewed at just happened to work.)

If it was the socket, the person at the clinic wouldn't been able to get a charge in the first place.

To me, it's not just a broken charger. It's a multi-faucet source of anxiety.

Because of one thing, I lost a whole source of freedom that I frequently abuse. I have homework to do, blog posts to write, a novel that needs to be worked on.

There's another computer in the house, but my siblings have it right now. I feel a lost of control over the fact, that in the end, they control access.

Also, when I can get my laptop to start working again, my siblings will come clamoring for it an hour later.

And in the end, I'll just go back to wasting time, because I lack accountability.

But once I can get this laptop to work, I'm seizing full access. My siblings won't be able to touch it. It's mine. They might have their games on there, but I need to get work done, and I need to get them out of the equation, even if for just one week, to kill my self-loathing.

And no matter how hard it is, I'm going to cherish my time on it well. I won't fall into bad habits and procrastination. I'm going to work and write.

I just want my laptop to charge.

Oh, no, I understand completely. Deprive a man of his freedom and he becomes an empty shell.

Anyway, I'm really not sure of a solution. Try going back and telling the store exactly what you said here about the problem. I'm not exactly a computer expert, but it's hard either way to try to diagnose the problem when I can't interact with the computer and chargers myself.

...come to think of it, before you do that, have you tried plugging the charger into a different wall outlet? Maybe your outlet in your house has blown a fuse.

Did you take your charger to the store and have them attempt to charge another pc with it? If not, then do so and report the result.

Another idea I have is the brand of charger. Are you and the store clerk using the same one?
