The exact same thing happen to me. It's painful to even think how much I floundered because of it. It doesn't help that you feel like an ungrateful ass at the end of it.

I'll admit, there's far worse things than to be too sheltered, in that at least I had a safe and reasonably well taken care of upbringing...but dear Lord did I never learn how to socialize normally. I'm convinced that the times that I manage to make any connection with anyone are all flukes, since I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing most of the time in that department. Couple that with a dearth of necessary street smarts (though I feel like I have learned plenty there, or at least know of what to keep an eye out for even if I haven't personally experienced it), and you've got a recipe for being Unprepared For the Real World(TM).

I wish my parents had given me more concrete guidance when it came to things like figuring out what I'm good at and pursuing it. In retrospect, I think they were so committed to not pushing me in any one direction that they went too far the other way and left me without any direction. I got to college, had no idea what I wanted to do with it, and never finished.
