Egypt takes harder steps to curb FGMnote .

Of the more than 125 million girls and women alive today who have undergone the procedure, one in four live in Egypt. That's more than any other country in the world, according to the U.N. Ninety-two percent of married Egyptian women aged 15 to 49 have been subjected to FGM, according to a government report released in May. That figure is down from 97% in 2000, but the practice is still the norm here. Most girls are cut between the ages of nine and 12, and the operations usually take place during the summer school break so the girls can recover at home.

U.N. officials say FGM has no medical benefits and can cause lifelong physical and emotional trauma for the women forced to undergo the procedure. "This is a gross human rights violation," Jaime Nadal-Roig, the U.N. Population Fund representative in Cairo, told CNN. "It doesn't add anything to the life of the girl, and there are no medical or religious grounds whatsoever."

A celebrated tradition

The most common FGM procedure in Egypt is Type 1, the partial or full removal of the clitoris. It's what Mona Mohamed — and her older sisters — endured years ago. Compared to her sisters, Mona was lucky, given that her procedure was performed by a doctor. Her sisters were circumcised with a razor blade by a traditional (non-medical) midwife who put dust on their wounds to stop the bleeding. Mona, now 47, recalls asking her mother why getting circumcised was so important. "Usually girls at your age get 'excited,' and this operation takes care of that," her mother replied.

FGM has been illegal in Egypt since 2008, but the practice remains woven into the very fabric of Egyptian society, where many see cutting as a way to "purify" a girl and make her marriage material. "People used to have a party after a girl was circumcised, they'd celebrate and exchange gifts," Nadal-Roig said. "So for them to turn from there and say, 'look this is a crime or this is a sin or this is not allowed by religion' means confronting a lot of beliefs and social norms."

Campaigners go on the offensive

But progress is being made. The percentage of girls aged 15 to 17 who have had the procedure has dropped from 74.4% in 2008 to 61% in 2014 — a clear sign that the drive to end FGM is working, campaigners say. Last week Egypt announced a plan to reduce FGM by 10-15% in the next five years. If it works, it will mean that for the first time in decades, "uncut" girls would outnumber those who have had the procedure. "It's an ambitious plan, but now I think that the political atmosphere is supporting us and we can reach our goal," said Vivian Fouad, the National Population Council official leading the government's charge to eradicate FGM.

But it remains an uphill struggle. Around six in 10 women think the practice should continue, according to the most recent government survey. "It's tradition, and there's no escape," says Sarah Abulaziz Mohamed, who was circumcised at 12 in her village of Mansour. "It hurt my dignity — I was forced to do this act that I didn't want to do," she said. "I hate the man that did this to me." Sarah is 40 now and has two young daughters of her own. She says FGM left her with lifelong psychological trauma, but at least it taught her a valuable lesson. "I definitely wouldn't do it to my daughters by any means," she said. "To this day I still have pain, and what's gone is gone ... that part of me can never be given back again."

Social acceptance of working mothers is at an all time high.

[up]The US (and my country) needs to learn a bit more from France, financially-wise, who has a proper program or financial and childcare support for working mothers.

Still, good to see some acceptance. My mother was a working mother (she's now retired), and, in a certain way, proud of it.

I hope that becomes more common in my country as well.

It would be nice if my mother could go back to working and nobody starts doubting her abilities

@Tobias Drake

As others have noted, there are a number of psychological reasons why women in general may defend the men who abuse them and go after those who try to defend them. In the case of the woman you just described, there's also another option, namely that maybe she just isn't a very nice person. She thinks, for whatever reason, that she's getting something out of this relationship, and since you are jeopardizing it, you end up on her hit list.

That's not to say the abuse she's received is in any way justified, or that it isn't a tragic situation all around, but not every victim of abuse is a wonderful human being. Sounds like this woman in particular is a lost cause.

I actually just finished Revolutionary Girl Utena which, among other things, seems to be all about abusive relationships and why people stay there. In a lot of cases (as in the show) it tends to be because their entire identity is wrapped up in their relationship with their abuser (although in a few cases it was an oddly one-sided abusive relationship, where the abuser didn't care that much about the victim, using them when convenient but mostly ignoring them, while the victim was still obsessed with the abuser).

Of course, they were almost all stupid teenagers, which is part of it, but at the climax of the series Anthy outright *stabs* Utena when she sees that Utena could actually win and beat Akio, her battering, sex-abusive older brother. Her relationship with him was terrible, but in a twisted way, she valued it.

it took Utena's self-sacrifice, being basically erased from existence, to give Anthy the courage to stand up. Anthy's triumph, as with more fortunate abuse victims, is anti-climactic. She says she's leaving and does, finally ignoring his protests.

Really wish i knew how to play that game. Striking out with online dating.

Hey, remember Tim Hunt, the Nobel scientist who made those awkward comments about women in labs? Looks like he got set up. A transcript of the meeting he was at has been released, and here's what he actually said:

It's strange that such a chauvinist monster like me has been asked to speak to women scientists. Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. Three things happen when they are in the lab: you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticise them they cry. Perhaps we should make separate labs for boys and girls? Now, seriously, I'm impressed by the economic development of Korea. And women scientists played, without doubt an important role in it. Science needs women, and you should do science, despite all the obstacles, and despite monsters like me.[

In other words, he was poking fun at his own rep as a sexist dinosaur before sincerely complimenting women scientists and their endeavours. Only the first half got quoted, and the initial reports also made the (false) claim that he finished the meeting by thanking the women present for their help with the catering. Now, there may be additional context that explains why UCL is continuing to refuse to reinstate him even after the Times revealed this on the 24th of June, but this incident appears to have been purely malicious journalism.

In other news, there appears to be evidence that women and ethnic minorities are picked as CEOs of failing companies to act as lightning rods for controversy, making the white men who replace them once the company rights itself look like saviours. Yay capitalism!

What's precedent ever done for us?

[up] And in addition to that, the President of the Royal Societynote , Sir Paul Nurse, is receiving hate mail after Sir Tim Hunt's resignation

It is early morning in Oxford and Sir Paul Nurse, the President of the Royal Society, should be preparing for a lecture on Darwin and Milton that he is giving in Blackwell’s bookshop later. Instead he is busy deleting a deluge of hate mail.

Since Sir Tim Hunt stood down over his infamous ‘trouble with girls’ speech, Sir Paul has been sent hundreds of vicious letters. Some argue that the Royal Society has not gone far enough in its condemnation of the Noble Laureate, while others criticise the 350-year-old institution for not backing the beleaguered scientist.

“Some have threatened to do things to my body parts,” says Sir Paul, in a weary tone. “The discussion has become totally polarised with extreme views on both sides. I have had hundreds of letters. I had five just this morning. It doesn’t seem to be going away.”
