@World Turtle 2: Well, the problem with the Holiday special was that it involved purposely derailing pretty much EVERYONE'S character to make An Aesop. A fairly valid aesop considering how awful people can be online, but one that essentially made everyone except Sunset into The Scrappy, especially since it takes place after Rainbow Rocks. Rainbow Rocks had good character development, competent and fun villains, and a good build-up to the finale. I do agree though that these kind of plots do make it sort of a "one-time only" watch (Or at least skip to the more triumphant parts). Some of the really harsh scenes (pretty much anything with Jerkass Sentry) is just to tough to stomach.

Except, as you pointed out, everyone is only being jerks because the dazzlings are messing with their heads, not because the story just wants them to be jerks, or for the sake of being jerks. So, yeah... not a big issue.

RD being an egotistical asshole however... yeah that was just plain annoying and got really old, really quick.

[up]I'm really worried about Flash going down that road. I was definitely fine with him in "A Banner Day" and I do liked hearing him heckle Celestia, but I really hope they don't push his ego any further. Making a Nice Guy a Jerkass does not make him a better character. Heck, if there's nothing to support it, it makes it even worse (Just look at Anti-Sue and Jerk Sue).

Flash is kind of sarcastic, but honestly, what teenager isn't? Twilight's pretty sarcastic herself. Even Fluttershy is kinda sarcastic in the EQG verse.

I don't mind the sarcasm and a bit of ego, which was why I didn't mind him in "A Banner Day", but there's just this fear that they'll keep pushing it until he's almost unrecognizable.

Characters being Jerks regardless of why doesn't make the film any easier to watch. It doesn't help even the heroes are being jerks (Rainbow Dash most notably). I did enjoy several of the songs and I liked Sunset's character arc over the course of the film (especially when she joins in singing at the end), but this just isn't something I'd watch all the way through again.

I don't get it. Yeah them being jerks sucks, but it's because of the Dazzlings, it's more reason to know they need to be stopped.

RD... is just bad writing and making her a showboating jerkass for the sake of having her be one. So yeah that one is pretty much the single biggest issue aside from those endemic to the concept of EQG in and of itself I have with RR.

I didn't mind RD being a bit of a showboating jerk, because she's had moments like that in ponyland, and this is an alternate universe where she hasn't gotten a bunch of character development. So it feels right that she should be a bit rougher than her pony counterpart.

Which only highlights that these are second rate copies of the real characters, banking on established connection to the original, without actually having any reason to connect to them themselves.

RD is a bit of a jerkass in the show even after her character development. Her being one in an alternate universe really isn't that out of character for her.

It was exaggerated for to much though. it's not fully OOC, but it is pushing it to the extreme.

Like with pinkie in Filli Vanilli. Except an entire movie of that rather then just two scenes.

We're talking clips here right? Because I don't remember Rainbow Dash doing anything out of character in the movies I watched. She has always been an attention whore.

Rainbow Dash the pony been developed as the seasons have gone by. Rainbow Dash the human seems more caricaturish/early pony Dash.

seems more caricaturish/early pony Dash.

And that is the issue, we already saw the character go through this development, so now, just copy/paste her over and hit the reset button to do it all over again? it's just lazy.

[up]You really don't get the concept of an Alternate Universe, do you?

Seraphem Since: Oct, 2009

This is an AU done very very poorly. It keeps the characters to similar to the originals to be taken as their own unique characters, but diverges and makes things to different for them to be treated same. And with no clear reason for a lot of the changes, and breaking links to their counterparts by having things so wildly random. Cheerilee is the same age as the Mane 6 more or less (She was in Rarity's class in school) but is a teacher while they are students now? The Mane 6 and CMC are a lot closer in age? And how the hell due multi thousand year old beings have middle aged counterparts there?

Even then, it might have been able to do it if i had kept it entirely separate, just this entire other universe, based on but with no connection to the Prime one. but they made it directly connected by having Twi go over, which only highlights how poor the Au compares to the Prime verse.

Oh no, character ages don't match. Sound the alarm.

I fail to see the issue. It's an Alternate Universe, which tend to have radical differences by definition. I mean, does it really matter if the ages of the characters don't match up with the main universe? They simply went with what would best fit the setting. What reason would Celestia and Luna have to be millennia-old demigodesses anyway?

you cannot claim that characters are counterparts to each other, without some consistent reason for it. If it is utterly and completely arbitrary, it makes no sense. How the hell are these characters counterparts to each other, when one existed far longer then the other? With those differences, they are not true counterparts, but the story wants us to treat them like they are.

Um...they have the same names, and have similar appearances, voices and personalities (accounting for some degree of Flanderization, but then again, different life experiences)?

Ummm, it's been a constant issue from the start. Not something new. Yes, we are supposed to treat them just like the real characters, despite all the ways they clearly cannot be real counterparts, due to so many differences that make no sense. It's lazy, and kind of insulting to the real characters.

They act and are made to be to much like the real ponies to be their own separate characters, yet are too different to actually be treated like them.

Thus, an alternate universe.

"What if the characters of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic were humans in a high school setting?" That's the concept here, with some crossover with the main universe.

It's not a 1:1 ratio, but we weren't going to get that anyway. In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter if some of the characters are different ages and positions? Again, what reason would Celestia and Luna have to be demigodesses in this world? A position of authority fits them best, and in a high school setting, the highest and most visible authorities are the principal and vice principal.
