I liked some parts but not others, which is perfectly fair. For example I actually found the Lars/Sadie interaction quite charming; too bad they had to ruin it at the end. Oh and Steven's singing and playing was great as usual.

Maybe we're all overanalyzing it in the wrong way. You know, like that time people interpreted Garnet and Pearl's conversation of Lapis Lazuli leaving Earth's orbit as horror instead of a form of melancholic homesickness talk.

I'm tired, I don't know what I'm talking about.

[up]I interpreted that scene as both uncertainty about the future (after all, Lapis was going to find out what happened to the other Gems, and they weren't) AND a hint from the show at events later in the season (I hope more Gems appear and have a face-off -of one kind or another- with the Crystal ones.)

Oh, just today I learned that shaving your head except for a pompadour in the middle is an actual style. It's a good thing I already knew what ear gauges are, or I might be asking if Lars was supposed to look like Buddha or something. tongue

Heh. I brought that up to my girlfriend too when this episode aired. Like, "I wonder how many kids know why Lars' ears look like that.", or something similar. tongue

Maybe that's what'll spur Ronaldo to get more involved with the weirdness he keeps blogging about. wild mass guess (I still haven't read his blog yet.)

I follow it. He's seen the aftermath of all the Gems' adventures, but he's come to the wrong conclusion every time.

So, I've been thinking of writing a Steven Universe fanfic. I only waited because I felt I needed more background story facts. I want to do a crossover with my own original character Sijo the Interdimensional Explorer in which he tries to find exactly what the Crystal Gems are. So far my ideas are:

  • Sijo discovers the Gem Temple and wants to get inside. He meets Steven, who, innocently, is more than willing to show him.
  • However, the Gems are annoyed by this (they don't realize Sijo is more than a simple human) and kick him out.
  • As he tries to think of another way in, a Gem Monster attacks (I'm thinking a Crystal Spider, I haven't seen one in the show yet.)
  • Steven and the Gems arrive to help, and together they defeat it and they collect the gem.
  • Now it's the Gems who demand to know who Sijo really is. He's willing to tell them- IF they in turn speak about themselves. Their answer?
  • "Never mind" and they return to the temple with the gem, leaving Sijo perplexed in the beach, and swearing he'll find their secrets one day.

How's that? There's details I didn't include for being too minor -Like Sijo meeting Sadie and Lars at the Big Donut- but in general that's what it boils down to. Does it sound interesting? Anything I might add? Note I'm trying to decide if I will write this.

Wait, I forget. Where did Sadie find the time to hide the warp pad?

I guess I was reminded of Bearmageddon, which also has a character with ear gauges and fighting with sharpened-stick-spears, and so I was a little disappointed Sadie didn't use the trick of letting the monster fall onto the spear.

I had been reading some theories that tried to make sense of how the Crystal Gems relate to other Gems... Somebody said they come off like a "postwar cleanup crew", and maybe when there are only shards of gems left, it's from a battle with a blast so intense that the gems' whole bodies couldn't be reassembled; only arms and legs were found. Somebody else guessed they were exiled to Earth for incompetence and made to clean up any messes the other Gems left behind. I thought it would be interesting if the Crystal Gems were in fact wanted criminals, and all the times they "accidentally" destroy temples are really their attempts to destroy the evidence of something they don't want anyone else to know about. Maybe the Red Eye was sent to pick them up, and Pearl in "Space Race" was just desperate not to get caught on Earth again! But I admit they don't keep a very low profile by living in a giant Gem statue by the shore...

I was also trying to follow someone's idea about Gems wearing a certain shape to show which faction they belong to. There were the drawings of the ones wearing triangles in "Serious Steven", for instance. (A weird thing about the storyboard for that one is that it showed the whole ceiling mural, but the figure standing in front of the crowd looked nothing like Rose Quartz. I don't know if this means that they hadn't yet decided what Rose Quartz looked like, or that they hadn't yet thought to place her there.) I'm not sure if Lapis Lazuli is considered to be wearing a split diamond or two triangles; it was confirmed that her outfit is two pieces, not one dress with a skin-colored belt. But it reminded me that while Pearl normally wears a yellow star on her chest, her flight suit from "Space Race" has a diamond there, and Holo-Pearl also has a red diamond there to match her open mouth (the swordfighting bot only, not the holograms that just repeat Pearl exactly), so you could go nuts imagining that it means she once changed affiliations and just didn't bother updating a few things like that. You could also go crazy with the idea that the number of points on the shape refers to the original number of members on the team.

Oh yeah, the other interesting fact I read about Lapis Lazuli was that the crack in her gem extended a little bit into the frame of the mirror itself, indicating the cracking occurred after she was already imprisoned there. And why would the mirror be discarded at the Galaxy Warp? That suggests somebody carelessly tossed it out just before ditching Earth...

People care about Saddie or Lars one way or the other?

Lars is a jerk, possible character development aside he'll probably always be a jerk. Some people are just like that. I'm okay with it. I'm one of them. I wouldn't call myself a jerk but I'm just a naturally irritable person.

Saddie is just there, without Lars to bicker with/pine over she has nothing.

I don't really understand getting invested in them or their relationship.

Because the show gives us episodes like the previous one that suggest to us that we should probably care (at least a little) about these side characters. Besides, Sadie and Lars also seem to be the main group of secondary characters that Steven hangs out with, and are evidently important enough to him that he felt the need to play Shipper on Deck.

My issue with the episode was how it just ended on a bitter note with no real closure. It'd be like if that donut episode cutting out the end where Lars and Sadie made up.

They'll probably build up on it later. This show is all about baby steps rather than outright being made fast and shoved.

They don't have to deal with it immediately in five seconds, but they could still have resolved the episode a bit better.

By the way, I'm not sure you'll want to watch the preview clip for the next episode, since it appears to be of a big confrontation from later on.

What'd I tell you about this being the season of kidnapping?

Comments on the soundtrack told me that the theme of Lion coming to the rescue sounds like the first level of the Gummi Ship from Kingdom Hearts. They also clued me in that when Crying Breakfast Friends goes to a commercial break, the "commercials" sound like the themes for G.U.Y.S., Cookie Cat, and Dogcopter 3. And when I watched clips of that episode again, I noticed the engine they tested had a part labeled "Jimsy". Why Jimsy?
