There's one character named Yellow Diamond whose servants wear the yellow diamond, so people (like me) just assume that all of the other symbols represent diamonds.

The only other one I've heard about Blue Diamond [...] is that Lapis Lazuli herself is Blue Diamond.
I've only seen that theory on this board, mostly from darkabomination. Has it gotten traction elsewhere?

The Diamond shape could represent gemstones in general not just diamonds.
There's one character named Yellow Diamond whose servants wear the yellow diamond, so people (like me) just assume that all of the other symbols represent diamonds.
It's also convenient to be able to call them "The Diamond Authority".

But then we saw the emblem with the pink part in Pearl's training arena plus the pink diamonds on Sardonyx's shoes, meaning Rose was more likely than not one of the major authority figures, so their names aren't necessarily "[Color] Diamond".

I don't like the theory that Rose changed her name (mostly because it seems so pointless), but do like the idea that it's just a title, and even "Yellow Diamond" isn't really a diamond.

Yeah I'm okay with it as a title. Also Space Race Pearl had a big pink diamond on her chest.

I guess the theory partly comes from the fact that RQ's gem doesn't actually look that much like quartz, which tends to have a matte, cloudy appearance rather than a clear, shiny one.

That's probably just an artifact of standardized cartoon gem depictions.

Yeah, jasper in real life is very opaque. Jasper's... jasper looks the same as everyone else's gem, only orange.

Lapis's gem doesn't have any white splotches...

Also, some of the corrupted/bubbled gems seem pretty big compared to what we've seen on functional gems, while Jasper's is smaller than average. She's probably sensitive about it.

And Amethyst is also a quartz, so the same thing applies to her as to Rose/Steven.

That's probably just an artifact of standardized cartoon gem depictions.
That and their gemstones seem to just be similar to their namesakes, not actually the same—Earth pearls are made by oysters, Pearl clearly wasn't.

Yeah, I don't think we're supposed to think their gems are actually gems of their namesake. Having a similar color and shape maybe, but not actually the same thing.

Maybe it shrank from steroid abuse.

The one downside to all these gem names is that some of them are just a mouthful to say. Like Yellow Diamond, and Watermelon Tourmaline. And they don't lend themselves very well to nicknames.

It's going to be weird seeing the actors say "Yellow Diamond" every other line when referring to her. Unless they make it easier for the villians by calling her "boss" or something.

Watermelon tourmaline.

Tourmaline is a fantastic gemstone because it can have multiple colors in one crystal like that. And the individual colors sometimes go by their own names, such as indicolite (blue), verdelith (green), and schorl (black).

Stuff what I do.

It sounds weird saying anyone's name that often. That's what pronouns are for—"Alexandrite" is also four syllables, and all throughout "Fusion Cuisine" her name was only said once.

I just meant that when they have to say her name it could make the lines sound awkward.

And given that she's a main villain they're going to have to do that more often than Alexandrite.

They can say Amethyst jut fine, so Yellow Diamond isn't that bad. Lapis Lazuli is even longer.

Granted they mostly just call her Lapis, but it does pop up.

It might be a little awkward (Lapis is a fairly easy diminutive while Yellow is not and Diamond could refer to other gems too if theories/assumptions are correct) but only for the occasional line, not a big problem.
