I'm watching Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai. I expected something light and silly, and that's what I got, but... this is terrifying. So many expies! So much lampshading! I'm through episode 2, and a freaking proto-Gurren has shown up! We also have a proto-Kyuubei of sorts. And then there was the extended shout out to 2001. And the nudity! What's with all the nudity! And this is the first anime where a girl's panties' smell isn't referred to as "delicious"; "Smells like piss" indeed! And the way the first villain was defeated! We need more of this crap!

EDIT: THEY USED THE TRACK FOR ANGEL ATTACK! THEY USED THE TRACK FOR ANGEL ATTACK!

FRIEZA, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR EYES?

THAT THING WITH THE PANTIES! IT'S IN PANTY AND STOCKING WITH GARTERBELT!

YES! YOU'VE STABBED HIM WITH THE CHEST THING! NOW TIME TO DRILL HIM!

THE FREAKING ARCADIA SHOWED UP?! IT HAS BODACIOUS SPACE PIRATES!

REI'S ANGEL CONTAMINATION SCENE, EXCEPT RIDICULOUS!

ISN'T THAT DRAGON FROM SUPER SENTAI?

IT'S THE DARTH VADER THEME!

AND NOW IT'S A CITY BECOMING A MECHA! ARC GURREN LAGANN! WITH THE GUNBUSTER THEME, TO BOOT!

THE MATRIOSHKA THING FROM THE END OF GURREN LAGANN!

A PROTO-GARHALLA!

WHO ARE THE NERDS WHO THOUGHT UP THIS SHOW, AND WHY CAN'T THEY BE GIVEN MOAR BUDGET TO PLAY WITH?

EDIT 2: RANMA'S DAD!

HE BECAME KENSHIRO!

MANLY VIRTUE BEARS NO LECHEROUS TEMPTATIONS! STAY AWAY FROM WOMEN, THEY WILL DRAIN AND POLLUTE YOUR MANLY ESSENCE!

So... Bruce Lee, then Jackie Chan, then Tekken, then Dragon Ball, ?

THE JURASSIC PARK THEME'S OPENING BRASS! I HAVE A BAD F-A WILD PTERODACTYL APPEARED!

...

Eh, it's kind of Akira Toriyama style, though. I can't take SD dinos seriously...

NO IT'S NOT A DINOSAUR EMPIRE! THAT'S ANOTHER STORY ALTOGETHER!

Somewhere A Paleontologist Is Weeping, and he's in elementary school...

That... why did you have to go that far? That line struck really close to home, you know?

He got the pelican, but it's the ground that broke? What, is it a hamon pelican?

You know what's small, man. Don't ask questions you won't like the answers of.

IT'S THE DIRTY TRIBE FROM AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER? OR IS THE OTHER WAY ROUND? I CAN'T TELL! ANYWAY, THAT CHIAROSCURO IS OBVIOUSLY IMAISHI!

The absolute, unabashed frankness of the fanservice here, especially the way other characters react to it and acknowledge it for what it is makes me wish we saw more of that in the media.

That must be the most half-assed way of Doing In the Wizard that I have ever seen.

STOP TEASING ME WITH THE OPENING AND PLAY IT ALREADY! HERE, DAMN YOU, HERE!

And now the show just turned into Homestuck.

IT'S CLASSIC LONDON!

NO, WAIT, I GOT IT WRONG! IT'S NOIR NEW YORK!

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

I apologize for the use of allcaps in the previous post. The show seems to encourage a shouting mood.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

[up]It's also amazingly stupid. I mean, it works when it tries for clever humour, but when it goes for stupid Straight Man routines it just lacks the Eiichiro Oda sort of flair this requires, you know what I'm saying? Like, it feels routine and perfunctory. Filler-ish.

Eh, the male protagonist was just a watered down Naota with a more perverted (and stupid) slant, and the girl protagonist was annoying in how selfish she was (yes, the boy was selfish too, but at least he was wiling to consider her points at times. She always kept going on how childish he was over his dream never realizing she was just the same, but with a faux-mature pretense).

The series is amusing, but it's also very 'same-Gainax'.

[up]Ah, yes, she was a very annoying kind of Tsundere. She doesn't even seem to have a Freudian Excuse like Asuka or have a reasonable sode Yoko; she's just a bratty kid, with all the Double Standard values in full gear. At least the boy is honest about his feelings. He's certainly mentally healthier and happier than Naota. It's the secondary characters that make it crappy. They're all amazingly flat and static.

No, I'm mostly here for the amazing animation and the hilarious faces the characters make. That's art, right there.

I don't think so. A lot of them get surprising, serious development during the end (how they are/were in the real world). Not all of them, of course. Some are only there for laughs.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

It's a hilariously funny show, though occasionally it touches on some very interesting themes in regards to fiction. Doubly so if you're reading the manga, where conventions that are particular to manga are discussed. Also, the English dub has some real gems.

I've gotta say this series perhaps has my favorite ever Gainax theme in the opening. Yes, even beating Cruel Angel's Thesis and Anaaaarkyyyy, everyone wants to be me...

[up]sad Sounds like random meaningless pop to me. A lot of the soundtrack is amazingly uninspired, I think. Truly the composer is no Yoko Kanno.
