I know nothing about VD: M except what you just posted, so I was slotting it into the general "anime schlock that you would think no one cares enough to dub (which always includes lots of sexism, because Japan is still pretty bad about that)" category, not doing an in-depth comparison.

VDM had a story, but, well, no one cared.

Also, wasn't Kiss X Sis dubbed as well?

Who would want to be on a show like that?

Hey man, Voice Actors gotta eat. And it's not like screen acting where having a terrible role on your resume could negatively affect your career.

Hey, sex sells. As one example, Keijo was one of the highest-watched anime this year on CR, and it got the broadcast dub treatment. Granted that's one of the most self-respecting fanservice shows in the last decade, so it's a bit of an unfair comparison.

Also given that the dub vs sub over all demographics is something like 60/40%, and fanservice is an easier way to get attention, it makes perfect sense that they'd want it to be dubbed, even if it's not exactly high drama.

Plus as said, voice actors gotta keep food on the table. And according to several voice actresses, it lets them go over the top with ham and sleaze so it's not like they're unwilling to do it.

[up] Keijo volume 1 sold just 800 copies in Japan so sex does not always sell.

Think Queens Blade but even more risque including actual lesbian sex with toys and orgasms are required for transformation sequences.

The sexism isnt really there really aside from a Bifauxnen who thinks there is, they tried quite hard to avoid it I think.

It's been a while since I posted here so, news:

  • The new Funimation site launched yesterday, and so far it's very intuitive!

  • Funimation Films released One Piece Film: GOLD this past week, and, even though this is the last day it will run in theaters in North America, it's looking to be a hit.

  • Funimation Films will release the dub of Your Name on April 7th in North America.

  • The dubs of Dragonball Z Kai: The Final Chapter, and Dragonball Super both premiered on the same week on Toonami on January 7th.

Keep in mind, an anime like Keijo doesn't just make its profit from DVD/Blu-ray sells, but also other merchandise like figurines, body pillows, what have you.

Sekerei's license expires on the 9th, and is not being renewed. If the replies are trustworthy, blame this one on Aniplex wanting all their shows to be handled through Aniplex of America or not be handled at all.

But if AOA really does lack it's own streaming service... this might lead to the hilarious situation of Crunchyroll having the rights to both the sub and dub of a Funimation show while it's partnered with Funimation.

They really need to stop, their expensive box sets really don't help, especially since they seem allergic to the idea of streaming their dubs. That ain't gonna fly nowadays, at least Sentai has very affordable titles. It may cut out all the fluff, but they're 40 bucks at most for a 13-episode series and you get what you paid for.

[up][up] I know Crunchyroll got the rights to both Full Metal Alchemist anime dubs after Funi's rights expired.

I know Sentai apparently made a deal with Amazon's new Anime Streaming Service so I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon is the one to eventually broker a deal with Aniplex.

So essentially the anime internet landscape is basically Funim AT&Troll (Funimation + Crunchyroll/AT&T since AT&T owns most of CR) vs Advmazon (zombie ADV + Amazon) vs Netflix (who aren't even trying to acquire a library and are instead making their own library. I mean shit, this approach has worked really REALLY damn well for them outside anime so I don't get why some see Netflix trying to replicate their working formula for anime as a bad thing tbh.)

[up] Pretty much. I feel like Hulu has more or less thrown in the towel. The last "exclusive" anime they got was Chivalry of a Failed Knight. Other than that their content is mostly hodge podge dubs and subs you can find on all the other apps.

Typical for such a big site upgrade, Funimation's videos are having trouble playing on phones. And I even used it on a desktop a few nights ago and the video kept buffering.

I'm sure they'll work it out soon enough. Looks like people have calmed down a bit from the "CR will turn the market to a monopoly, we're all doomed" mentality. CR's got the biggest piece of the pie, but Sentai has a lot of attractive properties in their own right, is willing to dub more niche shows and shoujo titles, something Funi doesn't really touch, Viz has a lot of older high-demand properties and a few very good new titles, and Media Blasters is on a slow nosedive, so there's still enough competition. Besides, a handful of great companies is preferable than many small ones, it ensures the increasing quality of the average dub. Seriously, compared with ten years ago, we're doing great when people were having doomsday predictions when the bubble burst.

Media Blasters is still just like "what are you even trying to do?" What with dumping their properties that actually have long-term popularity and then releasing garbage (with in house dubs!) that no one liked even if it was streaming, like Holy Knight or World War Blue. (Seriously, why World War Blue? Crunchyroll streamed it and everyone hated it.)

The reason for the earlier anime bubble (or at least one of the reasons) was that licensing fees were ballooning like crazy until Central Park Media couldn't handle it anymore and went out of business, then there was a domino effect on the smaller companies. Licensing fees were ballooning, but this deal between Funimation and Crunchyroll probably slowed that way down, because the two of them bid on basically everything, which drove the prices up and then Sentai grabbed the leftovers, with the occasional high profile thing Funimation didn't care about. Now that they're teamed up, the bidding is between Funimation and Crunchyroll together on one side and Sentai and very rarely Viz on the other. The bidding isn't going to go nearly as high as before.

And Sentai seems to have slowed down anyway, probably because of their ridiculous backlog of still to be released titles.

Not Three Laws compliant.

So anyway, wasn't there a thing about how Media Blasters dubbed the first season of an anime that Sentai got the rights to, and when the second season came around people didn't know if Sentai would dub Season 2 on their own or hire the Media Blasters VA's to reprise the roles?

.... Squid Girl?

I'm upset that Bakuman has such a failed dub history here in the States. A promising and great anime adaptation of the manga industry.... and the dub doesn't get produced past several episodes in the first season because of poor management and its studio shutting down.

The first several episodes of Bakuman were dubbed. It features one of Chris Niosi's first anime roles. It's incomplete. :( And no other place seems to want to license the show.
