Does Not Illustrate: Loads And Loads Of Races

This trope has been totally redefined. With the crowner now stabilized (though mods haven't gotten around to calling it yet) there's a minimum of 15 separate species for a work to count. And those species need to have at least some description, artwork, or screentime to count. But a work can be from any medium now.

I figure it shouldn't be too hard to get a screenshot, comic panel, or other piece of art from some work that shows 15+ intelligent life-forms all in a room/bar/fight/whatever. As long as they're all clearly sentient (using weapons, wearing clothes, or saying something), and are visually different, it should work.

If anyone has any suggestions for the video game subtrope Massive Race Selection, you can post them here too. That one requires at least 6 playable options which have different game mechanics. I figure something from WOW would work — either a screenshot of a character-race-deciding-screen, or of a party. Like the left-hand sidebar of this.◊ Or perhaps this.◊

I tried to find some images for the supertrope, but I think the best bet would be a Cast Herd image from a work with a very diverse cast.

The problem here would be the size. If we shove 15+ races into one image it will most likely become hard to recognize even in 350px. As long as the point is made of there being a bunch of different races in the picture, the issue of there being an exact number shouldn't be considered.

That said, I think #1 aranged in colums might work, but I would prefer something more vivid, like in this style◊ (BTW, I'm not actually suggesting that pic, but I believe something from Super Mario Bros, especially the RPGs, could get the job done).

Seems to me that the easiest way to do this, although it might be time-consuming to put together, is just get screencaps of at least 15 of the different characters and make a collage.

I agree it doesn't necessarily need to be exactly 15. Just, clearly a lot, more than 5-6. More than 10, preferrably.

I'd thought finding screenshots of, say, Star Wars would be easier, but I couldn't get anything good.

I don't think that would look good at wiki size. If you want to use that book for something, go for it.

I'm not certain that pic isn't a photoshop. It looks odd somehow, like the woman was added in.

Those are good; I have a slight preference towards the second. I've also thrown up a sandbox for trying a two-image arrangement, since I like doing that and it'd sure get the trope across! Feel free to tinker with arrangement, levels, etc; the current one looks good on my screen, but font size and page width vary per person.

My preference is a bit towards the first, but both are excellent.

I prefer the first, if the half cut off characters are cut off completely. On the other hand, the quality seems better in the second...

And because of that, I prefer the second.

Here is a version of the first, without any character fragments, and with the quality improved a bit (but the source is indexed color... not a ton). I was going to do both versions but discovered to my dismay that one of the characters that is cut off is also standing among the main pack, impossible to paint out. Doh.

The "i word" tipped me off that probably isn't true. Just have to paint out a couple other characters, too, unfortunately.

Is it good or bad that two of the ones in the second look the same but with different colours? But that aside, the first one has larger characters, so it's a little clearer.

I like the proposal of having both images facing each other...

I think just one is better. I still prefer the first one since the characters are a little easier to see/tell apart, but either one is fine.

Also, any objection to using this image◊ for Massive Race Selection?

That's perfect for that one.

For Massive Race Selection, this◊ was my first thought.

If it was cropped to just the selection window, it could work, but I like being able to see the features of the races in the World Of Warcraft screen better.

EE's not an example because they have no mechanical differences. Otherwise it'd be great.

Let's make that decision its own thread so we don't lose focus here. Crowner between the two options?

OK, HERE is a crowner. It has just the two options since nobody seems to be in favor of the earlier suggestions.
