For one thing, everyone except the center character is white on a white background, and therefore are REALLY hard to make out. For two, even studying them, I barely see the motif (One dude does look like a horse though). At least if it was in color it'd be legible.

I'm not really seeing "chess" in this image at all, to be honest. The caption implies it's there, but it's really not obvious from a glance. Maybe the horse-headed guy, but that's about as obvious as it gets. It doesn't help that the image is so detailed and busy that I can't tell where one person ends and another begins.

I don't know if it's worse than no image, though.

I can see the motif, but it's weak. Really weak. I definitely think we should replace it.

+1 to pull, relies way too much on the caption.

Opposing pull; without looking at the caption, I saw there was a knight right away and the rook isn't hard to make out either. A replacement would be very nice, though.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Homestuck has a lot of chess stuff.

[up] Ugh.

Personal bias against that art style aside, you can barely tell there's a chessboard pattern in there, and the figures are so weird-looking that I can't see anything relating to chess figures at all.

EDIT: Okay, I see a bishop, but that's about it.

I have no qualms with Andrew Hussie's art style.

However, that's not a very good shot.

Current (posted) is almost invisible, hence

agree with pull motion.

@6 is good for me.

@7 has several pieces, but the artwork is so distracting it might as well not have them.

The problem with Homestuck is that while the chess motifs are very prominent, there's rarely a clear shot of them that doesn't show an actual chess board.

Here's a few I found that looked decent.

Just a rook, but it's obviously a rook and it has the board motif.

A line of pawns. Bad quality, unfortunately.

The current works, and probably even better or equal to most suggestions.

However, the Lelouch one is good and clear.

The Lelouch one isn't really Chess motifs at all; it's just him sitting with a bunch of pieces. Also, it's fanart; the chess motifs in the actual show are very different.

I forgot a very obvious example: Through the Looking Glass!

All pieces accounted for

The Alice artworks are good, much better than the MSPA pics, but I think I like the Lelouch pic a little more.

I just remembered that Cerebus had one arc where chess motifs were central to the meta-plot. Here's some pertinent cover art: Issue #158, Issue #159, Cover art for Women TPB

The real problem with HS is that it's not very obvious that there are any pieces beyond the kings, queens, and maybe pawns, except by implication.

Like the first Alice pic, but would want to see it at wiki size.

[up]I don't think every single piece is required for a Chess motif. If it's clear the designs are influenced by Chess, then it's a Chess motif. I think something like the second Alice picture might be nice simply because it shows that Chess motifs aren't just designs, but can also be plot points.

I'm saddened there's no anime or toku superhero team with armor resembling chess crowns. :(

Well, HS' kings, queens, and pawns don't look much like those pieces either.

Is it possible to find a version of that first one that's as clear as the second? That's my only objection to it.

How about this?

I also believe this to be a good picture for the page.

That's no different to or higher quality than 20.1 (which, by the way, is my favourite image so far), sorry.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

So far I'm leaning towards the Alice pics and away from the HS pics.
