Only on Naboo. Leia wouldn't be a princess of it wasn't hereditary on Alderaan.
Princess King sounds like something from Adventure Time.

Yeah, Naboo came from a hereditary monarchy because its colonists came from there, but they made it into an elective one.
It's actually quite interesting how Padmé got the throne.
I recall someone replying to accusations that Padme's story was unrealistic with an actual, historical example of an elected teenage monarch who was one of the best rulers the society ever had, but I can't recall what society it was.
I think if we are going to accept that she was just that much of a political prodigy to be elected at such a young age, then it needed to be treated as a much bigger deal then it was. But no one really treats it as all that out of the ordinary and Palpatine describes her as being naive.
It's funny because her election is actually covered in a book released right before the old EU got separated: It was all a plot by Plagueis and Palpatine.
Regardless, all subsequent queens were young women of about the same age. It could very well be a policy of electing prodigies and surround them with experienced officials. She has some power and considered the head of state, but is not the sole policy maker. It's sort of a merging of democratic policy with figurehead kings, presidents, emperors, etc.
In the old EU, from what I remember, the previous monarch was a middle-aged man who was kind of terrible at ruling. IIRC getting Naboo into hot water with the Trade Federation was basically his fault.
Yep. He was the one that established the Royal Naboo Starfighter Corps, though, so Veruna wasn't all bad. He just made the mistake of not only being a bad King but also pissing off a highly influential businessman.
I like this thread.
Veruna was initially in bed with the Trade Federation, but then decided to screw them (to the point that Palps himself came down and murdered him), leaving his successor on the hook for a very pissed off Trade Federation. Padme was chosen because she was the child of two well-known public figures and she was known for her work with refugees, so she was more of a figurehead than Veruna, and she was nudged towards the throne by Palpatine. The people of Naboo obviously wanted someone very different than the scheming middle-aged man, so picked an idealistic young girl. Palpatine figured her idealism would stop her from further building a Naboo military (correct) and that her youth would make her more likely to crack under pressure (incorrect).
In what language is "Rey" King? I know "Rex" means King, but that's it.
Spanish. Rex is Latin, Spanish is a Romance language (as in, derived from the Romans and Latin), so...

Huh, gonna have to look that up. Did not know this.
Also, shouldn't Leia's claim to the Alderaanian throne be null and void? Seeing as the planet is gone.
If Alderaan has any colonies that were loyal to the throne she would be the ruler of them. It's also very likely that not all the citizens were on the planet at the time.
Yeah, there's quite a few Alderaanians off world at the time of Alderaan's destruction. A lot of manpower in the Rebellion came from Alderaanians.
That's why I said "technically" a princess. They never lost the crown and titles. They just lost everything else except for some expatriats. I guess it would be similar to real world monarchs having titles to lands they didn't own (like the Habsburg's being "Kings of Jerusalem"). They could still be considered legit marriage material by other royal families though.
Huh. Rey has a very Spanish name.
Rey Solo = A lonely king/ a king alone/ one king/ The sole king
She's the only descendant of Anakin Skywalker apart from her mother and uncle.

"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."Unless she's Rey Organa instead. It doesn't necessarily have to be the father's last name.
Or they go the squicky route and she's Luke and Leia's child.
Rey Organa Skywalker-Amidala Solo.
Can't be a proper monarch with the Overly Long Name.

PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyMan, I'm just imagining the sort of teenage arguments a Skywalker kid would have with their parent.
"You're the worst dad! I hate you!"
"I'm sorry, did I abandon you to strangers for decades while I was off running a brutal fascist dictatorship and blowing up planets? No? Well then I think you've had it pretty easy!"
"I also offered you the greatest job in the whole galaxy num-nut - mine. What is it about 'We can rule the galaxy together!' that you just don't get?!"
But Leia is already the best Disney Princess!
Besides, it would have been better to make Rey the daughter of Princess Leia for the sole fact that her name means "king."
