I've been pretty impressed by it so far. There are some presentation issues easily noted (such as the game not clearly stating its equipment unlock system, ouch), but the core gameplay is quite good and I'm pleasantly surprised someone made a first-person melee-based game work when every implementation of it I've seen before this was noticeably simplistic... they also seem to be working on such matters.

From what I've heard this is basically Mount and Blade with controls that aren't terrible.

How accurate is this?

Only combat-wise and even then it's not really close to M&B. The more similar game is War of the Roses, which is also in 3rd-person. Chivalry is focused on multiplayer.

War of the Roses has its combat system much closer to M&B than this game...

Both are multi-focused though from what I heard...

Nah, War of the Roses doesn't really seem M&B-esque in combat. For one thing after you take someone down you actually have to finish them off instead of them just dying. I've watched a lot of gameplay of this and I think it's a lot better.

I can explain how the combat works.

Melee-attacking consists of, LMB: slashing from side-to-side, mouse wheel up: stabbing forward, mouse wheel down: downward overhead slash. Any of the attacks can be quickly comboed with a subsequent LMB slash.

You can raise your melee-weapon for a small instant to parry with RMB. You require a shield to hold parrying.

Blocking attacks and melee-attacking costs you stamina from a bar. Not doing either for a short-time will cause your stamina to begin regenerating, but sprinting, while not costing you stamina, halts stamina regeneration.

You can feint your attacks by starting to strike with your weapon and then canceling the attack with Q.

Lastly, there's kicking/shield bashing with F which a small amount of damage but more notably will stagger enemies for a followup attack, even if they are blocking.

Melee weapons' traits consist of reach, damage from stabbing versus swinging, and speed for recovery and swing time from strikes. Stabbing and slashing is more effective against the lighter classes, blunt weapons are better against the heavier classes. There is environment collision for weapons, leaving the larger ones unable to effectively swing around tight areas.

The game also includes shields, throwing weapons, bows, crossbows, javelins, oil pots (like an incendiary grenade) and smoke pots (like a smoke grenade).

Alright, I just got this game as a gift and it is very fun.

Had some good matches as a vanguard with a spear and even managed to go a couple rounds where I killed around five people before dying.

And then I met actually good people in the game... Wow, humbling. Facing them one on one or even with a partner results on a curbstomp. They fight three people at the same time and win most of the time... they block all strikes and kick all your defenses away. And whoever says archery is useless has not met these guys.

Now I really have a standard to aspire against.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

I don't have a problem with Mount and Blade's controls. People keep telling me they're bad, but I love 'em. tongue

I thought of getting this during the Sale, but I really don't like Multiplayer. There are single player modes but they really just amount to practice for multiplayer.

Yeah, Mount and Blade's controls are a lot simpler than what Chivalry's seem to be.

They are, at least for attacking. You click and drag the mouse instead of using different buttons for different moves.

I get the sinking feeling the simplicity of M&B's control system is what people mean by awful. Although a friend of mine talked about cavalry controls being wonky for him during the demo he played. Not sure when he played it, so I can't say whether he has a legit complaint or not anymore. I don't have problems dealing with horses, you just need to look at maneuverability ratings and get the best ones there.

ETA: Looking back at it, I think I can see what people are referring to, actually. Sometimes the mouse swing registers wrong and you wind up doing a different move. That can be solved in the options menu by checking the box that lets you see your attack directions. You can see what you're doing before you do it.

Wait a minute, how is it they can't... what exactly is in those regulations that's forcing so many developers to reconsider hosting servers in Europe, or worse even shutting down?!
