I'm working on some original fiction and I'm trying to think up a name for the main religion's god. Some background on this: -The religion is monotheistic -The deity is genderless -This takes place in a quasi-Medival European setting... I tried researching some words of various languages (mostly Latin and some other European languages) that had some spiritual significance (spirit, everything, god etc.) that I could alter or mash together. Only problem is, I can't seem to find anything that's phonetically pleasing. After all, there's going to points where characters say things along the lines of " Oh my DEITYNAME " and I don't want it to sound stupid. Does anyone have any suggestions/tips?

Do you want it to be based on a preexisting word or an original word?

I'd prefer if it was based off an actual word, to provide some significance in it's meaning, but yeah...

Considering that you've basically got a Christian sort of religion going on, something somewhat biblical could give you a good effect. I don't know if a name itself would work quite as well, just because in English something like 'oh my god' or 'oh my lord' sounds better than 'oh my yahweh'.

But anyway, for quasi-biblical names he could be Host*

or Sovereign. Dipping into more Greek roots, you could have a name similar to Wisdom (the female aspect of God was Hagia Sophia, or 'holy wisdom'), or you could take cues from Gnostic theology and have him called Demiurge (coming from the Greek word for craftsman) or the Demiurge's 'proper' name Aariel. Also from Greek/Gnostic stuff you could have the title of Archon or Aeon.

Yeah, I was going on a quasi-Christianity type route (this technically doesn't take place on 'Earth,' so Christianity never existed) But aeon and possibly demiurge actually sound quite nice. I think Aeon could work, I just want to make sure it doesn't sound too alien to the audience.

Do you want a name or a title? Like, if you stick with Aeon, will they "pray to Aeon" or "pray to the Aeon?" Because that might tie into how you come up with invocations along the lines of "Oh my deity." Maybe the phrase could be "By the Aeon!" or "By Aeon's hand!" Just something to think about.

Off the top of my head, how does "Hegetor" sound?

It's , kind of, a phonetic transcription of the Greek: Ηγήτωρ (Igitor), which means: "Leader", and/or: "The One In Charge".

You can pronounce it stressing the first "e". It's of male gender in Greek, but you can genderlessify it by sprinkling some Artistic License over it! Sounds Medieval-y and has a meaning.
