I'd be suspicious. I was once contacted in a similar fashion by a proposed web site looking for literary content. I followed it up and nearly got to the point of doing a phone interview when I found out it was a scam to get people's social security numbers (which they'd ask for when they "hired" you). Follow it up if you want to, but ask for bonafides and credentials, and don't give them any personal info until you're sure of them.
I'll be cautious too. It didn't appear on Duotrope.
I would be very wary. There are a couple of alarm bells going off.
They haven't produced their first issue yet — it's not a literary magazine, yet, it the promise of a literary magazine.
Unless you are an established or at least published creator in the sort of thing they're looking for, the fact that they solicited you to submit is very hinky.
Looking at their Submissions page, they only want first publishing rights, not exclusive. But the First Publishing rights are generally the most important, because there are relatively few publications that will accept previously-published works. Everybody who will want your stuff will really want First Publication, not Reprint rights.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.
I don't put my personal e-mail on the Internet. Or if I ever did, I've slapped myself and removed it.
But somewhow, Slippage Literary Magazine found it and tried to interest me in submitting or becoming part of their editorial staff. I have no idea how they found me, if they read any of my work, whatever. I just checked my e-mail and there it was.
When I googled this magazine, I found nothing, and the first issue only comes out this spring. Do you guys know anything about it?
