Just a little bit of news in spoiler tags for your safety:
MOTHER has lost half its character representation in Super Smash Bros. (Lucas). On the bright side, MOTHER 1 actually gets a stage: Magicant. So we can mourn and cheer at the same time.
In news that doesn't need to be spoiled: the lead developer of the MOTHER 1 remake hack has released two videos showcasing minor gameplay changes.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.On the one hand, I never got around to MOTHER 3, and was never terribly good with Lucas anyway, so his being cut from the new Smash doesn't reallt bother me.
On the other hand, I did clear MOTHER 1, so I'm pretty hyped for Magicant getting a stage!
What's playing MOTHER 1 like? Is it as tedious as people say?
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.its a better experience if you turn off random encounters and make fights impossible to lose.
everything else is just fine.
I played the GBA version with translation patch, rather than Earthbound ZERO. And... well, it's pretty clearly a first instalment.
I remember there being a few places that I really wished were shorter, and the final dungeon was much worse than the final boss.
This having been said, however, I'm still very glad to have played the game, and recommend it to any and all classic JRPG fans. The soundtrack is amazing ("Pollyanna" and "Wisdom of the World" being my favorites), and IMO there are some surprisingly powerful moments in the game, particularly when someone in Queen Mary's castle tells you about [Mary's] nightmares, foreshadowing Giegue's backstory.
The game also has a Pippi Longstalking cameo early on, which amused me.

i was unusually struck by the way you take down the final boss.
Oh, damn, how could I possibly have forgotten that one?!
I have failed horribly as a MOTHER fan, to have forgotten that that was even a thing.
But yeah, MOTHER 1 and Earthbound (which I need to start again at some point, try and get past Fourside) are both pretty cool in having unconventional methods of dealing with the Final Boss.
But defeating Giegue with the lullaby is just... beyond words in how cool that concept is.

Mother 3 does too. it's both cool and tragic.
its not just cool, its kinda depressing actually, considering its the lullaby his surrogate mother sung to him, before he left her behind.
you're basically guilt tripping him into the abomination he is in mother 2, iirc.
How would that even work, though?
well not literally, i let my wording get away from me there.
as far as i understand it, what happens is that you overwhelm him with guilt about the whole thing, making him withdraw. and either because the aliens are angry about this, or because the guilt-tripping had a lingering mental effect on him, they apparantly do something to him, experiments i guess, to turn him into what he is in mother 2.
its been something like 3 or 5 years since i played this, so i might be misremembering but im pretty sure thats how i interpreted the way it went down, based on the information provided in the game and the way the final boss fight goes.

Wait, isn't the Giygas you see in Earthbound from an earlier point in time than the one in MOTHER? At least, I had thought so due to all the foetal imagery.
...nope. he's sane in mother 1, for starters.

It's him after the first game. He's just attacking from the past. (He most likely time traveled.)

I'm the guy who knows how to make games but doesn't. 3DS FC: 2878-9776-7579come to think of it, i dont know when earthbound takes place in relation to mother 1.
huh.
10-20 years later, I believe.

Y'know what? Because it's on my mind and I love it, here. Wisdom of the World/Queen Mary's Castle.
Giygas of Mother 2/EB is pretty much what happens when you attempt to drive your power to its limit and in the process destroy your mind back to a fetal state, as I recall.
He pursued enough power to defeat the world his mother was from and ended up rending his own mind and memories in the process.
A reflective casing.
I'd really like for a remix of Wisdom of the World to make it into Smash Wii U.

For Smash Wii U, all I'm asking for is a Pokey Means Business remix. It should begin with the SNES sound front and then kick into heavy metal.

Welcome to th:|Licensing issues would probably make that impossible.

Has anyone seen the "improved" final boss from MOTHER 3?
