Probably something to do with her being 75, her Mother and Grandmother having done the same thing and her younger son presently being in a coma. Sometimes you just have to say "time for a long, long holiday" and call it a day.

Well, she's turning 75 in a few days, and it's 200 years ago that the first King of the Netherlands was crowned. That's two nice round numbers. Also, she apparently believes that her son is ready for the responsibilities of kingship.

Abdication isn't uncommon here - the last Dutch monarch to die on the throne was William III in 1890.
