Well the EQG ones have always been really out of it.
The others, it's really only Katie that twists things around to make her story, no matter how unlike the actual characters or setting it requires.
Ako: Oops, guess I forgot about that. As for that idea, that sounds interesting. Maybe the secrets could have still initially be perpetrated by the CMC because the person seeking revenge convinced them that all the stuff was going to be harmless pranking.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiMinor continuity issue that drove me crazy. In a post Rainbow Rocks story, Sunset acts like she's never been to a slumber party before... despite the fact everything about the first slumber party being lifted directly from Rainbow Rocks. Pinkie's room, the outfits, video games, pizza, Maud cameo... most minor continuity issues in the comics I forgive because Animation Lead Time, but here Hasbro clearly showed plot details/designs with IDW ahead of time. A weird thing to complain about, I know, but it drove me crazy.
Also random things to note, Rarity doesn't have a driver's license/car, and Sunset is homeless.
You there! Check out my Youtube Channel! The power of Ponies compel you!Oh, yeah, I noticed the slumber part weirdness too, but that kinda got pushed aside by my other issues. I agree that it's distracting, though.
I don't know about Sunset being homeless. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall seeing her taking shelter under a bridge or the like. Sure she doesn't have a family to see in the Equestria Girls universe, but I think she looks well-groomed enough that she probably has a warm place to stay.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiYeah she has to have someplace to stay. After all this time in the EQG world.
When she's writing to Twilight in the library on the book of beds in her pajamas, I assume it suggests Sunset doesn't have a house to go to. Unless you want to say she literally lives at the school... which, would be odd. Did they just not want to establish where Sunset actually lives, or what? These Equestria Girls comics always leave me with so many questions...
You there! Check out my Youtube Channel! The power of Ponies compel you!Wait.. so.. if that was the case... why didn't Twi see her there in the first one?
Hmmm, that is a little oddball. This is probably stretching it a bit, but maybe she was using it as a safe house from all the angry people who may or may not know where she actually lives? >.>
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiTed posted this on the IDW forums:
Doesn't really answer the question, but just putting it out there. Honestly, I'm not gonna bother trying to think of answer because there are so many things wrong with this story that I'm just gonna chuck the whole thing away as Fanon Discontinuity.

At this point, I've personally consigned everything in the comics to "they're comics published in-universe about the Mane Six and their adventures, typically using large amounts of Very Loosely Based on a True Story".
There are certain elements in the comics I find interesting (like Mimickers, Crystal Bards, parallel universes, etc.), which we can assume (until proven otherwise) exist in the "real" Equestria. Everything else is the in-universe writers pulling things out of their asses.
We know for a fact alternate worlds exist in canon.
Yeah, seriously. Twilight won't use magic on the bulls when her friends and subjects are being attacked, but she'll do exactly what she refused to do when a historical landmark is vandalized? Katie's writing is getting worse with each issue she writes.
Funny thing is that I actually enjoyed this issue, but only because I chose to pretend that this was not MLP and even then I still feel bitter reading this. If you think of this as a Spongebob episode or some other cartoon that relies entirely on slapstick, then it's actually kinda funny (the other bulls were actually kind of entertaining to read). Unfortunately, MLP is not one of those cartoons and that's why this entire arc failed.
Or let me put it this way. There was one or two things that made me chuckle. That's more than I can say for the previous issue and the Holiday special.

Would Twilight's behavior be considered Skewed Priorities or Honor Before Reason, or something else?
Also, she's not willing to abuse her authority, but is perfectly fine with abusing Celestia's authority to essentially solve her problem for her? About the only redeeming factor is that Twilight didn't rub it in Applejack's face by pointing out she didn't have to resort to using magic to stop the Bulls.

Not only that, but to quote another fan: "She was also willing to commit a multitude of crimes, of which includes holding a person against their will, in order to construct a fake historical site for the sole purpose of abusing her powers. If she was going to go end up abusing her powers anyway, she might as well had done it sooner and save the townsfolk the grief of being terrorized for however long they endured".
Yep, now I'm definitely not going to take back what I said about Katie being the worst FIM writer period. Turning not just Twilight, but the rest of the mane 6 into Designated Hero's because the plot demanded it, and also making the former into a hypocrite.

Moral Dissonance, then?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I don't think it qualifies. AJ and RD ask her at several points to use her magic, but Twilight refuses to budge.
Just wait for Season 5 to roll around and completely contradict the comic when Twily's friends are threatened.
It's already contradicted it. She's NEVER held back using magic when it came time for a fight or to protect her friends.
Except that one time with the Hydra, which was more like she just totally forgot she had that ability.
Happens to the best of us.
She was distracted with the Pinkie sense.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. The comic itself already contradicted it, unless those pirates weren't "legal citizens of Equestria".
What we have here is a major case of Depending on the Writer... Say, when's the next issue being written by Heather Nuhfer? Feels like its been a while since we got something from her, I always enjoy her issues for some reason.
You there! Check out my Youtube Channel! The power of Ponies compel you!No, that's when things are slightly different, but still more or less work together. The tone, the fell etc.. are off, but no actions outright contradict each other. this is just bad writing.
Okay, it could be both, but still bad writing since it shows Katie is giving less and less of a fuck about the show, rather wanting to write the story she wants, and altering the canon to fit her story. rather then making sure her story fits the canon.
I'm downright convinced that the IDW universe is what happens had Discord won in Return of Harmony by this point.
