Exactly why would a bear want to shape shift? Is it not the supreme land predator already? Seems like you can only go down from there.

Key word is "land". Plenty of birds and sea animals to turn into.
Also, in one book (can't remember which) he lures away some wolves by turning into a mule deer and evades them by being way more agile than he could as a bear. He can also turn into humans.
And Shoteka is hardly the Big Bad. He shows up briefly in The Quest Begins and again in Great Bear Lake, and that's it.

Well, I suppose you could consider Great God Oilrigus the Big Bad of the first arc of Seekers, but you have to admit that that was a pretty lame villain.
As well, Shape-shifting Bear Jesus probably needs to shape-shift to fire his Jesus Beams or something.

I don't think the first arc really has an individual Big Bad. Maybe the humans who are destroying the wild, collectively, but definitely not Shoteka.

I'm kind of annoyed by Unalaq (spelling) being portrayed as a villain. Random bears show up and tell them not to eat food anymore. Isn't it right that he should be suspicious, especially since they stole a cub?

Read the first three books,liked it much better than Warriors at the time,...but I found out it was gonna get a manga and go the same way.....yeah I didn't pick up the fourth book and I have no regrets,...I left before it Jumped the Shark,...something I wish I had done with Warriors.
If I remember correctly Toklo was the asshole,Ujurak was the shape-shifter,Lusa was the kind,and Kallik was the middle ground.

Anyway, River of Lost Bears looks interesting. I'm hoping it's another Toklo book, because we only got one of those (The Quest Begins) in the first arc. Also, Shoteka should show up, since it is the home of the brown bears.
Also, book six should be a third Toklo book. Nanulak is the Big Bad of Return to the Wild, and Toklo is his chief enemy. Really, Toklo is probably going to be the main character of arc 2. If we ever get an arc 3, I wonder who it will follow: Lusa, or the cubs of the main characters?
