In a record-breaking announcement, Dream Works Animation said that they'll release 12 animated films through the years 2013 through the first half of 2016! 3 of them are sequels, 1 of them is a spin-off, and if Rise of the Guardians is a hit enough hit, add at least 2 more sequels to this list! This surely comes from the recent news that Dream Works is now under 20th Century FOX for its distribution deals, as well as enlisting its new China division to produce the second Kung Fu Panda sequel, and it now has an Indian division producing a cartoon spoof on Bollywood musicals! The movies are:

  • The Croods (March 22, 2013)
  • Turbo (July 19, 2013)
  • Mr. Peabody & Sherman (Nov. 1, 2013)
  • Me and My Shadow (March 14, 2014)
  • How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 20, 2014)
  • Happy Smekday! (Nov. 26, 2014)
  • The Penguins of Madagascar (March 27, 2015)
  • Trolls (working title, June 5, 2015)
  • B.O.O: Bureau of Otherwordly Operations (Nov. 6, 2015)
  • Mumbai Musical (working title, Dec. 19, 2015)
  • Kung Fu Panda 3 (March 18, 2016)
  • How to Train Your Dragon 3 (June 18, 2016)

... whatever negative impact this will have on Disney or any other studio is anyone's guess. This looks like enough more than they can chew than when they announced 2 new films a year, and NOW they're trying to get MORE out??

I really want to know when are they scheduling the release for Captain Underpants

Sadly, a lot of acquistions they get fall through the cracks in favor of ideas from their own executive producers or star directors. They picked up Punk Farm, a children's book by a college alumni of mine back in 2005 that they never did anything with.

Captain Underpants is a far more popular book series though, international best sellers with a Japanese following big enough for them to have made some viral videos based on the Captain.

Maybe they'll make animated shorts about them that they play in front of the films.

It's likely that some of these are done by different parts of the company than others, so they're likely not actually overextending themselves. If they have a division for television animation, which I'm fairly sure they might, the The Penguins Of Madagascar movie will probably be done by them.

I'm concerned at scheduling the third HTTYD movie two years after the second, but they could be developing the two simultaneously or something.

My guess is Captain underpants will come out around 2016 at best...On a related note of this, I am looking forward to Me and My shadow and how to train your dragon II.

Out of all these, Turbo and Happy Smekday are the ones I probably won't see, the former because it sounds rather dumb and the latter because it has Rihanna playing the female lead. Everything else sounds worth checking out.

"Me and My Shadow"

If this is what I think it is then: NOO Ooooo!

St-stay away from that fairytale Dreamworks! I still don't trust you!

[up][up][up][up]Um no. I would NOT be happy if The Penguins of Madagascar movie was the television quality it was in the TV series. Also, Nickelodeon Studios made that show separate from Dream Works- they are not part of Dream Works Animation.

[up][up]People will find it hard not to make fun of the word 'Smekday' since it sounds just like Smex day.

[up]Me And My Shadow will take place in the present with humans in a city, with the only fantasy elements being sentient, hand-drawn-animated shadows from a world of their own. What made you think this was a fairy tale?

I wanted to read it as "Shrekday", as if the Shrek series were starting back up again.

Unless they're playing fast and loose with recognizable nonsense words, I'm pretty sure Happy Smekday is based on The True Meaning Of Smekday.

Would have been nice if even the slightest information was posted with the film titles. At least from the source I read, Me and My Shadow sounds like a cute concept. I haven't watched HTTYD or Kung Fu Panda myself, but hope they'll end up being good too.

Holy Grail, huh? Cool story, bro.

Aww, 12 movies and not one of them a sequel for Monsters vs. Aliens. Got a softspot for that movie.

But yeah, only 3 years between them all is a little much.

We don't know all the synopsis' for all these films yet.

Turbo stars Ryan Reynolds as.... a snail that wants to compete in a car race, I am DEAD serious.

The Croods is directed by Chris Sanders and concerns a prehistoric family and a lot of wild creatures.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman is based on the Jay Ward cartoon about the intelligent dog and his owner with a time machine.

BOO will be about ghosts. This is the first time I heard of Trolls, but I just hope it isn't a remake of that craptastic earlier film.

[up][up]...but those were so '90s. Why would anyone want to make a movie about them now? Who is even going to care about the inevitable marketing ploy of making new troll dolls to tie in with the movie? It's not like there's a ton of people who have '90s pop culture nostalgia these days or anything.
...it's still a horrible idea.

But, then, apparently Furby toys are going to be made again...
