Sure, Matues.

Basically, as I said before, the power is limited to your character and your character's body only. The limit of your power is essentially your character and your character only.

For example:

You can set yourself on fire, but you can't set other people/things on fire (unless you come into physical contact with them), you can read people's thoughts, but you can't broadcast your own to them through mind-links. You can become denser than you would otherwise be, but you can't turn other things denser. You can grow and expand your own bones, but not other people's. You can have the ability to have super speed, but not to give other things super-speed, meaning if you carry anyone, they don't have the Required Secondary Powers and will likely suffocate for a lack of air or have their soft-tissue mashed in in ways that it shouldn't, etc etc. You can have the ability to levitate, but no telekinesis.

If you have a character with a grey-area power in mind, feel free to explain it here(or in PM if you want), and I'll tell you what my ruling is.

I hope that helps. grin

@Karl Kadaver: I like the idea that his money goes to paying for the property damage caused by his fight the Wolfman, that said... he is not disabled, he does not have a family of 3 to feed, and if he has a job, and is qualified to obtain other jobs, and has the ability to lift heavy objects and not be crushed by things... he should be making a ton of money in construction work, and not be on Income Support. I understand that his money goes to paying for the property damage, but that shouldn't be ALL his money.

My apologizes for the double post.

Anyone have a good idea for a weakness for super-strength? Most of the ones I'm things of aren't quite adequate.

Sure. Super strength...hmmm...

Well, he can have super strength but not super endurance, making him tire easily after using his powers and have a time limit.

He can have super strength in muscles but normal sturdiness, meaning that he may be able to do a lot of things but if he pushes it too hard his bones may break or his muscles may tear or his body may collapse, etc.

He could have super strength that also slows him down a lot.

He could have an Achilles' heel where he can be super strong but has a given weakspot and if he's attacked in that particular place he feels huge amounts of pain, or is weakened, or dies.

He could be dumb muscle, easy as that, and easily tricked.

He could have a big drawback in it draining him, so if he wants to be strong for however long, later he has to pay for it by being weaker than a normal person.

He could have little control over his abilities and have Does Not Know His Own Strength apply to him.

You could have him be in general denser than the average human and have him drown easily and be unable to swim because he's heavier than water.

Off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more.

Powers work like this currently:

  • Dan has a higher number of muscle fibers than most people and they are far more resilient that the average human's. This, taken together with his denser than average bone structure, allow him to exert much more force without harming himself. Most of Dan's muscle fibers are fast twitch Type I Ia, which allow him to make very quick burst of high speed and power. However, this also means that it's difficult for him to sustain this force.

  • Name: Dan Wilton
  • Age: 15
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: A short kid and slightly grungy alright, he looks like he goes dumpster diving regularly. Has dark brown hair and green eyes, and he wears a ratty looking oversized hoodie that he never parts with.
  • Nationality: American
  • Personality: Typically long suffering. He's very used to having people confuse him for being even younger than he already is. Tends to be a bit withdrawn. Back home he was the boring voice of reason among his friends, pleading with them to not jump into the pool from the roof.
  • History: His family moved around a lot, all through the southern part of the US. Nice enough people, though like some they were far from supportive of the mutants. Freaks. Abominations. Lovely words that got tossed around a lot. So, when Dan's powers showed up they flipped and began to try their hardest to fix him.
A few months later and Dan is a runaway. He headed for Canada mostly by accident, just out of trying to get as far away from his family as possible. Getting into Canada was fairly easy, he just jumped over a few fences.
  • Abilities: Super-Strength, Enhanced Durability
    • Dan can absorb kinetic energy directed at him and store it for later usage. This both makes him slightly more durable than a normal human and allows him to preform great acts of strength.
    • Weakness: In order to exert force, he has to stop absorbing kinetic energy. Otherwise, his power would just reabsorb the force he was attempting to exert. Because of this, there's nothing protecting his body from the effects of his ability.
  • Notes: He is an illegal alien in canada, and currently surviving off of homeless shelters.

I like him, as to the "weakness" part, you already have muscles with a roughly 30-minute window before they become exhausted, and your guy doesn't have super strong skin or anything similar, he'd be just as vulnerable to poisons and the like as then next guy and he'd be kind of screwed and have a hard time not sinking if dropped on a lake or a pool because of his being denser than normal, so I think that's good enough.

Also, he'd still have better endurance than an average human being, (though given that he'd be heavier than the average human being, the better endurance wouldn't be all that much) biologically speaking. He would have no problem lifting a fridge... so long as he only has to carry it for a few minutes. And the increase in speed (biologically speaking) would be less notable than his increase in endurance (which is somewhat offset by the whole being-heavier-than-a-fridge thing).

All in all, I like this guy. Though how heavy he is is starting to become something that should be clarified, he has super-strong and also necessarily heavier bones to put up with the super strong and heavy muscles, he should be really really heavy, which would limit his jumping.

Okay... see, noteworthy difference would be that Karl's guy can stop weighting as much if he wants to, your guy can't. Also, I'm assuming he can't "shut off" his powers at any point... Still though, short of going for something that isn't super strength, there will probably always be parallels.

If you wanted to go for another power, the ability to say, absorb energy directed at him and then release it in kinetic form could have both the super punching and lifting things ability (without the weakness of getting tired for using his power if you liked, as that could be easily replaced for him lacking the ability to heal or withstand such amounts of force, meaning that he could punch through walls but then would have massively bruised knuckles if not a broken hand)

Interesting. So the main limit would be the amount of energy he could store?

#40: Aug 30th 2012 at 4:09:40 PM

I'll rule that there is no limit of the amount of energy he can absorb/store(or the limit is high enough to make it irrelevant in-game for now) but there is a limit on how long he can keep is stored, so you can't just keep a big punch stored up for days until you need it.

I'll give you a few hours, say 4 hours or so. If he stored up a bunch of energy and didn't use it for four hours, his body would try to get rid of it all at once and he'd pass out or have a high fever or have muscle spasms, etc. The severity of those would be decided on a case-by-case basis depending on the amount of energy he didn't use up.

Is that good, or would you like it a different way?(I can change it if you want something else.)

Name: John Dimitri Kozak

Age: 43 (appears to be 30)

Gender: Male

Appearance: Tall, shaggy shoulder-length black hair, green eyes, athletic build, short beard.

Nationality: American

Personality: Blunt, very pragmatic, opinionated, distrustful of strangers.

History: The second child of Russian immigrants, John grew up in Brooklyn, New York's Brighton Beach neighborhood before enlisting in the Army at 18. He completed SF selection, and was assigned to a team months before the first Gulf War started. Throughout the desert campaign, John repeatedly survived ambushes and explosions that would of killed other men, but strangely left him with minor wounds. Taking into account his strange streak of luck, and his Russian heritage, his teammates jokingly gave him the nickname Rasputin.

He survived the war intact, and was more than willing to fight when the War in Afghanistan kicked off. He went in with the first wave of American forces, and put his training to excellent use when he and his team hunted the Taliban throughout the mountains.

As fate would have it, his luck was bound to run out. While out on a nighttime patrol, his ATV hit an old Russian antitank mine, and the subsequent explosion shook the ground and sent him flying down the ridge line. His bones were broken, he was bleeding out of a hole in his chest, and the only reason he still had his right leg was due to the fact that it was attached to his thigh holster. As he lay there in agony, he choked out a short prayer in Russian, and waited for death to take him; but it never came.

It felt like a lifetime, and the pain was incredible, but when he came to, he was whole again; minus a large portion of his gear and clothes. When his team finally made their way down the mountain to his side, the medic was at a loss for words. As for John, he just shrugged and lit up a cigarette.

After serving his time in the Army, he began to travel the world in hopes of finding more info about his "condition"; using the skills the Army gave him when the situation deemed it necessary.

Abilities: superhuman healing factor.

Name: Althea Campbell nicknamed Thea.
Age: 24.
Gender: Female.

Appearance: Thea doesn't really stick out in a crowd, with her black hair that reaches her shoulders, and grey eyes. Maybe she's a bit thinner than looks healthy, of a lean build with small curves and wiry muscles. One of the things that sets her aside from the average human being would be the bruises that tend to make her skin a rainbow of blue, green and purple hues underneath her clothes. She usually dresses in comfortable clothes, most of it fairly skin-tight to prevent any hindrance of her movements.
Nationality: Canadian.

Personality: This girl is a ticking time bomb of bad temper and bad judgement. There's a lot of anger stored in that slim body just waiting to be directed at today's unfortunate victim. Instead of perhaps seeking out anger management (as she ought to) she's directed this anger towards the "evil-doers" of society, whom she can safely beat up with few repercussions... enter the vigilante with a grudge. At the core she's a nice girl though, who wants what's best for the people around her, and who likes long jogs in the park and Leonard Cohen music.

History: Thea had a quite normal childhood until her powers manifested when she was about the age of 14, through a football that should've hit her in the stomach passing straight through. She'd always been one of the children that was picked on in school, because the other kids found it "funny" when her temper ran off with her. But from that day onwards she was truly singled out as the "freak" she was.

At the age of 15 her best friend's mother and brother got killed by a couple of mutants in a bank robbery gone wrong, and her friend refused to see her throughout the mourning-period, before she and her father eventually moved. It was about this point Thea began roaming the streets at night for mutants abusing their powers (or just normal humans being assholes - she's not picky). Throughout the next 5 years she got beat up a lot.

She stayed in school though, ardently honing her powers through the government-funded program her parents had entered her into. She took up the hobbies of parkour and taekwondo to channel her anger into something practical and in an attempt to lessen the numbers of times she got her rear end handed to her on a silver plate. Eventually she passed on to the University of Calgary, where she's studying Exercise & Health Physiology.

Abilities: Intangibility/phasing - the ability to phase through solid things by moving through the spaces between the atoms of a given object. If physically touching an object or a person, she can extend her powers to them as well (she can phase approximately the mass of a large, grown-up man beyond herself).

Weakness:
- Very dense material is more difficult for her to pass through and may even be painful.
- Since she can't breathe while passing through an object, phasing through objects is limited to the amount of time she can hold her breath.
- When she's phasing it's like consciously clenching a muscle, and she's only able to do so for a short period of time before she has to relax and let go of the ability.

Notes: She has a tabby named Maestro.

Two things I notice. The first one is that you say she's mean and with a nasty temper—but at the end of the Personality section, you say she's actually nice. Which is it? The second is that you say she manifested her powers as a baby, but mutants only started manifesting powers in 2000, which wouldn't fit her age.

I like her, though I have 4 questions.

First: How does she get beat up if she can become intangible? I'd think she could just let any punches through her.

Second: Why can't she breathe while she uses her power? Physics-wise we are ALL moving in the space between atoms in the air already, she should only be unable to breathe when there's no actual air to breathe— like if she's inside a wall or under the ground, or in other similar circumstances. Also, can she do that partially, with only sections of her body, or is it like an on-off switch where her whole body becomes intangible (in which case she'd be falling through the floor a lot unless she could also "float" while she was in that state of intangibility).

Third: Did she get into any of the programs to help mutants control their powers?

Fourth:... Doesn't being tiny and super-skinny set her apart from the average human being?

I like her lots though grin. Great to have you on board smile.

(PS: Also, Wysp's question)

I must admit most of these are simply because I was tired when I wrote this, so apparently it come out a bit incoherently tongue Anyhow, here goes.

@Wysp: She IS a decent person who basically wants everyone to have a nice and easy life. However, because of what she's been through as a kid being alienated from everyone around her, seeing her best friend go through the ordeal of losing her loved ones, and experiencing the general polarization between humans and mutants, she's developed a lot of anger. This combined with her volatile temper (which she's always had) and her general impulsiveness, makes her a person with anger problems, but not necessarily a "mean" person. This is the reason she goes after those she sees hurting others, instead of beating up your average guy on the street.

About the powers-manifesting in 2000 then that's simply some continuation from the X-Men world I didn't know about.

@Faramir:

1) Actually I thought about this, wanted to write it as a weakness but then I forgot. Becoming intangible is a conscious act for her, meaning that she can only activate it as fast as she can react. If someone were to sneak up on her and put a bullet through her head, she would still fall over dead because she wouldn't have time to register the attack and turn herself intangible. From the age of 15-20 she got beat up a lot more, because she was still learning to use her powers, and because her general battle-reflexes weren't that honed. Now she's trained her reflexes, but hits that take her by surprise still connects. So if say, she was fighting more than one person, she'd have to turn tangible to hit the person in front of her, and perhaps she'd miss the person behind her who was throwing a punch at the exact same moment. I mainly put this in to not make her OP because "OHMAHGERD CAN'T BE HIT".

2) What you said and I didn't clarify. It's only when her head is inside a wall she can't breathe. If a foot is inside, and the head is outside, well that's fine tongue She can turn parts of her body intangible. When completely intangible she doesn't fall off the floor because she's technically not walking on any surface, but moving through the atoms. This would technically mean she can walk in the air, but again, I thought this was a bit too OP. So I thought enough control to not fall through ground into the core of the earth... but not enough that she can actually fly around like Superman.

3) Since her powers were discovered, I guess she did. Does that mean anything significant change to her history?

4) ... I guess that's true. I wasn't thinking her being super-skinny tongue My doctors have said I weigh less than what's healthy, and I look pretty average - I'm just skinny xD But I'll change the wording.

Anything I missed?

Edit: Alright I've edited her profile. I've mainly changed appearance and history, since those were the ones were something "changed". The other things were just additions, so I thought it a bit needless to add them up there when they're also written right here.

Well, regarding the third thing, yeah it kind of does. If she went through most of highschool in the mutant-oriented schools, she wouldn't be singled out as a freak, not to mention they're probably waaaay less tolerant of bullying in those schools (since most of the kids were probably bullied at some point) and there'd be no one calling her freak or picking on her.

Also, how on earth she got away with vigilantism for nearly a decade without much problem would be another question in need of answering. And I'm not sure about her having the ability to extend her power to other living beings. She can certainly extend it to other physical objects (otherwise she'd have to be naked ever time she uses her power) but if she was able to extend it to other people then she could all too easily drag people into the ground half-way to make them unable to attack...

Unless of course, you're willing to make it into an on/off switch whereas if the person has turned intangible they can leave any solid object they're trapped in, regardless of whether or not she's touching them...which opens up a really really big can of worms regarding whether or not that would count as her giving them a part of her powers and whether or not that would mean that so long as they have something within them which could be any object) the 'victim' woud get to keep it...

All in all though, accepted, liked, and you can start posting now if you want!
