Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Alright, the show's starting now with Bad Influence and a whole mess of other stupid stuff.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, it's Time Masters.

And here we be: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

Well, with a rather split vote, it ended up being ★★.

Hey, fellow coven members.... I got a suggestion.

Hopefully some of you are around to read this, but this movie is one I thought ought to have been done by the coven. It wasn't available on You Tube when I thought of it, though. Today, however, I looked around... And it had finally appeared.

I showed it to a friend and he dubbed it "Neorealism for kids." Can you withstand the infamously depressing 80s kids film... The Brave Frog?

Wow. It's Japanese, of course, so it's far more daring than US animation was at the time, but I wonder what US audiences (and their parents, who likely would not be watching it for themselves) thought when they saw it.

[up] Most of the comments I found show that the movie is widely hated.

This was actually cut together from a Japanese anime from the 70s, Kerokko Demetan. As MST 3 K has proven, cutting TV episodes into movies is never a good thing, which may account for the bad reputation. The original TV series is considered a classic over in Japan.

Anyone want to add this as a suggestion?

The comments on the video indicate that many people found it disturbing and upsetting when they saw it as kids. Even at ages as young as 3, people were disturbed by the movie.

[up] The very first thing in the film is little baby tadpoles getting eaten alive. How can you not be disturbed at that?

[up]The fact that the animation isn't wholly dramatic and the voice actors suck ("Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, my babies are being eaten alive! ...One by one... Who will save us? What can I do? Is there no escape???")... A better question is, "How could you not be laughing uncontrollably?"

In other news, tonight brings us Paul Hogan as an Australian cowboy and Cuba Gooding, Jr. as his mute sidekick in the western comedy Lightning Jack.

Anybody remember Amy's Baking Company, from that one episode of Kitchen Nightmares? The owners have finally gone off the goddamn deep end.

I apologize for using a TMZ video.

[up][up] The idea itself is pretty disturbing.

So, Sean, will The Brave Frog go on our suggestions list?

[up]It's on the list.

I should also share that I'm beginning to feel really unwell as of now. I began taking some cold and flu meds a few hours ago when I felt the early onset of some symptoms... but it's just been getting worse and worse as this day has been going by.

I'm probably gonna have to lie down in a short while, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to catch the show tonight.

Tonight it's the 1994 comedy Western Lightning Jack!

At our current home at Cytube: http://cytu.be/r/tropercoven

The movie is the normal length, but I'm starting the pre-show a bit early since dinner time overlaps with the time the pre-show would normally start. But don't worry: the movie is still shown at the normal time (I added an extra video to the pre-show to fill in the space).

Anyway, come on in!

Well, it was ★★★. It got two 4s! And tomorrow, we get to watch a live-action Disney comedy about a mummy...

It's officially October, and that means monsters and spooks and things going bump in the night and 80's horror binges. For me, it may as well be Christmas; this truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

We'll be setting aside the best stuff for closer to Halloween (as well as honoring the anniversary oyf our Kung Fu Friday ritual on the 17th), but until then, if anybody has ANYTHING horror or Halloween-related that they would like to bring to our attention over the next two weeks, please share, and I'll make sure we get to watching it.

And, tonight, we'll be kicking off the Halloween season with Under Wraps...

I actually do have something Halloween related, and it's animated.

The Halloween Tree, a 1993 film by Hanna-Barbara.

Has "Halloween" right in the title. It's based on a novel by Ray Bradbury, but condensed for the sake of being an animated movie - characters were removed, for instance. Bradbury wrote and narrated the movie, however, so the changes have his blessing.

But basically, a local boy named Pip is very ill and may die. His friends go trick-or-treating and encounter an eccentric elderly man with magic powers, who decides to teach the kids the meaning of Halloween. Along the way, they keep encountering the ghost of their friend.

Sean, if you want to watch a Halloween related film... How about Little Red Riding Hood and the Monsters, from the people who brought you Mexican Santa, where Riding Hood and Tom Thumb go up against Dracula, Frankenstein, and even Satan!

I would gladly go for that also. The Mexican Santa movie was trippy and strange. I wonder what this is like.

I've discovered the worst movie that MS T3k has ever shown (at least, the writers/actors say so).

Also has one of the worst movie endings of all time.
