Soo, broken link or conspiracy?!
"You can reply to this Message!"I found it by using google. Apparently they made a "Discovery for the history books" but won't announce it until December 7-9 because they want to double check their data.
Since they wernt looking for life, I really doubt they found some. Water, maybe.
Link fixed
And to the contrary since water was what they were looking for would they be hushing things up if that's what they found
They found a 1985 Volvo.

Trump delenda estThey were looking for organic compounds. That's close enough in my mind.
Well, the article says its from the chemistry lab which identifies organic compounds...microscopic life could be a possibility...damn tease!
Bear in mind that amino acids are basically long carbon chains.
And just saying it:
Whatever they find will end the world as it was predicted!

"You can reply to this Message!"Best comment on that article:
"What did we wake up and how mad is it?"
hehehe
"You can reply to this Message!"This sort of thing is more than a little frustrating.
I can understand the respective merits both of releasing preliminary, possibly incorrect data if it's interesting enough and of waiting until one is more sure; but what meaningful purpose could this "tee hee, we might have made an historical discovery but we are not going to tell you about it yet" nonsense possibly serve?

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.Hype? Depending on the magnitude of the discovery they might sincerely feel this is better than saying what they think it is and winding up wrong.
To avoid giving the impression of "science by press release"
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI wonder how most of the public will react if they say they really did find life.
That's just not serious behaviour.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas. My guess is it was something big enough that they knew they'd have leaks so they threw the press a bone.
Trump delenda estYeah, on second thought it probably is a biosignature, like an amino acid. Not a long, complex one, mind you, but something along those lines.
Yarp... I'm betting on something organic and, probably, smelly.
They probably want to keep people excited. Lack of public interest kills projects like this, if I remember.
Me, I don't want to get too excited until we have something more concrete.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...Looks like it was a false alarm

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Nasa- "GUYS GUYS WEVE MADE AN AWESOME DISCOVERY ON MARS!"
several weeks later
Nasa- "uh...oops. our bad, we didn't."
I'm baaaaaaackI think it's more like:
One NASA scientist - "GUYS GUYS WEVE MADE AN AWESOME DISCOVERY ON MARS!"
Several weeks later:
Rest of NASA - "Gee, thanks, buddy" >=/

Dammit NASA, we just want to find Aliens!
Why don't you understand that?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I'm sure they want to find aliens too.
You should blame the aliens. Y U no exist?!
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...More "Y U NO on mars?"
I find it increasingly hard to believe theirs NO aliens in the universe. I don't think theirs (currently) any in our solar system, though Europa might have some fish-like things.
I'm baaaaaaack
The link isn't working.
