Both are good, but I think I'm leaning to the rai stones.
I think a real life example might work best.. at least more than the Ningi since it's just so weirdly worded that it seems like it's lacking information.
Numerous cultures across the world used cowrie shells at once point or another.

I prefer the OP's second suggestion; the first one relies entirely on the text, weird as the currency is.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. It'd be awesome if we could get a pic of Orks using their teeth as currency, but I doubt that's gonna happen. My only concern about the stones is the potential JAFAAC argument; otherwise I'm fine with the pic.

Rocks rock.
The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.Like the rocks, although the rubber triangle is pretty cool as well.
The triangle picture is worded badly.
Since a couple of people have mentioned it.. the Ningi pic is worded the way it is because it's part of a scrolling block of text, which was the show's way of depicting an entry in the electronic Hitchhiker's Guide. (Tho they did it entirely with traditional animation, which is really impressive.)
http://www.mansionofe.comSo you're saying that somewhere out there, the words in that picture are actually grammatically correct?
"In fact, there are three freely convertible currencies in the universe, but the Altairian Dollar has recently collapsed, the Flainian Pobble Bead is only exchangeable for other Flainian Pobble Beads, and the Triganic Pu doesn’t really count as money. Its exchange rate of six Ningis to one Pu is simple, but since a Ningi is a triangular rubber coin six thousand, eight hundred miles long each side, no one has ever collected enough to own one Pu. Ningis are not negotiable currency because the Galactic Banks refuse to deal in fiddling small change."
http://www.mansionofe.comClock is set.
Rai Stones is good. And while I like the HHG suggestion too, I don't think it'd work well resized (and probably cropped too) to 350 pixels.
Jet-a-Reeno!Here's the Rai stones. For a caption, maybe something like "Here's your change"?

http://www.mansionofe.comPerhaps: "The exchange rate doesn't matter much when you can't carry your money to the bank."
(That said, I do like the above-proposed caption.)
My Games & WritingThe stones are a good example but what about the image makes someone think "currency?" Is there a Wikipedia article the caption could link to for an explanation? EDIT: Yup, here it is. Literally "stone money."
This trope feels like any image it has would almost require a good ol' fashioned "Not Making This Up" disclaimer since almost anything could work.

"Silent Hill always gives the best presents." -agentjr "Death feels like acoustic guitar." -helloweenI like either one of those captions, potholed to the Wiki article.
The clock's up. I put up the Rai stone pic with the latter caption and the Wikipedia pothole...although in hindsight, I think I'm going to change it to the former caption. Locking up.
Must be something we can find for this. A couple of suggestions:
The Ningi◊ from Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.
Some real-life Polynesian Rai Stones.◊
