Background: The Student Prince is a 1924 operetta with music by Sigmund Romberg and book and lyrics by Dorothy Donnelly, based on the 1903 play Alt Heidelberg (Old Heidelberg) by German playwright Wilhelm Meyer-Forster. The title character is Prince Karl of the fictional German kingdom of Karlsburg, who attends Heidelberg University incognito to learn more about the outside world and falls in love with a barmaid named Kathie, but ends up having to marry a princess instead when he finds out his father's dying. Massive Tear Jerker.
One possible updated scenario: Charlie is the son of a literal robber-baron, a former outlaw who got lands and a house from a prince, who has been homeschooled since he was five. His father decides to send Charlie to High School and then to university in order to prepare him for taking over his business which spans several space colonies and has paid for his house. This means that he has to go and live incognito. While at school in a small town, he falls in love with a girl working in her parents' bar and eventually elopes with her in the middle of the term.
Anyone interested in this idea for a collaborative project? (Something like a Deconstruction of the aristocrat-falls-in-love-with-commoner type, showing how difficult it is.)
