I'll say, Ron the Death Eater's probably more common, since your average harem shitfic and your average yaoi fangirl garbage both use it a lot.

It did name a trope, after all.

Person was arguing that DE Ron used to be common, but now there's fandom wide pushback.

Yeah, no, it's still incredibly common, and most of the people who complain about people erasing Ron's faults are complaining about the character development he got in the actual books.

Are there any well-written Slytherin Harry fics?

Yes, actually.

But you'll have to slug through hundreds of thousands of garbage Harry/Draco shipping to find them.

So I usually don't go for Dark Lord!Harry fics... But when one of them has a summary like this: "For Teddy Lupin, Harry Potter would become a Dark Lord. For Teddy Lupin, Harry Potter would take down the Ministry or die trying. He should have known that Hermione and Ron wouldn't let him do it alone." it's worth checking out.

Turns out the characterization is really good or at the least believable and the author manages to avoid the worst of the tropes associated with Dark Lord!Harry fics. Harry, Ron and Hermione are sticking together and a bunch of the people Harry taught in DA end up showing up to at least hear Harry out.

Reading the first chapter now, like what I see so far.

You know, it was only an offhand mention here, but it only just now struck me how creepy the Veil is - just what did they do to make that thing?

Also, apparently Mrs. Black's portrait was a Horcrux this whole time. I...honestly never would have thought of that.

Does that mean that her soul's still flying around somewhere?

The Veil isn't really all that creepy. It just kills you if you go through it. Most of the 'creepy' stuff attributed to it comes from fanon.

Well, I think that if it's not being portrayed as super-creepy, then someone's not doing it right.

Again, I think it's less what it does, and more of how they made it in the first place.

So, I finished that fic. It was definitely good, although I won't deny that parts of it made me uncomfortable. I decided to leave a comment expressing my mixed feelings, which I felt was necessary, since it almost entirely consists of praise. Not that said praise is unwarranted, but it'd be nice if there were some that were a little more critical, I suppose.

Petunia and Sirius in a Slap-Slap-Kiss relationship.

Fairly sure that Sirius wouldn't exactly like a racist and bigoted woman with an elongated neck and the face of a horse.

This would be after a messy divorce and a few years of heavy alcoholism on her part, mind you.

So?

Still racist and bigoted against Sirius and all those like him. In fact, bitterness would probably make her even worse.

Canonically, Petunia never gets over her petty hatred of her sister.

Fanfictiom writing is about subverting canon in interesting ways, isn't it?

Anyway, the point of divergence would be during second year. If you recall, Harry and Vernon did not exactly part on amicable terms at the end of summer. So as soon as Harry was out of earshot, Vernon started arguing that they should just chuck the kid out and put an end to their involvement in this. But as Petunia knows why Harry must stay, she insists otherwise.

This difference in opinion eventually snowballs to the point where the two have a very heated argument and Vernon pulls a low blow by saying that defending a freak like Harry makes Petunia just as much of a freak as her sister was. He was hoping to cow her into submission with this - but Petunia, having shared more than just her last name with Lily, gets majorly offended and gives him a piece of her mind. So at the end of the year, Harry returns home to the surprising news that his caretakers are divorcing and Petunia is moving out, him going along with her. Dudley may or may not go with them, but I'm currently leaning towards no, with Vernon fighting tooth and nail to get custody of him so that he can be kept well away from those crazies.

All this does not mean that Petunia suddenly likes Harry or anything. It's more of an "I don't care what you do, just leave me alone" type relationship.

The Petunia/Sirius angle came when I considered the possibility of Harry owling Dumbledore for administrative assistance in getting him and Petunia somewhere to live and the old guy hands him the keys to Grimmauld Place 12 (after a thorough artifact cleanup).

See, here's the thing: There's subverting canon in interesting ways and then there's making arbitrary changes to the characters just so your story can work. The latter becomes problematic when it conflicts with canon.

And in this case, it does.

Because Petunia would be happy if she didn't even share a surname with Lily.

A thing a lot of writers do is write Petunia sympathetically, and I believe it happens just because she is a woman, and people are more inclined to write women sympathetically. But Petunia is just as bad if not worse than Vernon, and Vernon's hatred of 'freaks' comes from her, because he wouldn't be aware of the magic world without her.

My stance on the matter of how much is too much when deviating from canon: let the reader decide. The line is drawn differently for everyone; if it's too much, they're not going to read it anyway, so what's the harm in it?

Regarding the rest of your post, I actually got the impression that canon!Vernon is the same kind of person as Fudge: rejects whatever doesn't fit into his own little perfect world.

Personally, I'm with IANCE on this one.
