So, quite a lot of things are taken for granted in american politics:

  1. Freedom of speech is good.
  2. Democracy is good.
  3. Economic growth is usually good.
  4. Tyranny is bad.
  5. Wasting money is bad.
  6. Dictatorship is bad.
  7. Fraud is bad.
  8. Oppression is bad.
  9. Nobody in a position of government gets a special title (your excellency, your Grace, your Majesty, your Highness) or a neat hat (Crown, laurel wreath, tiara).

Does this stifle original thought and creativity?

This thread seemed more appropriate for Yack Fest, so I moved it.

I'd say it promotes creativity and original thought because of freedom of speech. The rest I'd say would have little effect on creativity and original thought.

Freedom of speech does the exact opposite. It promotes creativity and original thought.

The rest... kind of have nothing to do with either. Though I suppose the wasting money thing can be seen as stifling it, as corporations are inclined to go with "safe bets" rather than creative ideas. (See: Most of the gaming industry.)

Democracy is good.
...and the opposite "communism is bad".

Privatizing any service of use is good, making it public use is bad.

I don't agree with that 99% of the time, but hey as long as there are Republicans, that's going to be an argument.

Any other developed country wouldn't even dream of privatizing half the stuff we already:

A) Have privatized and keep stopping from even having a public alternative (Health Care)

B) Are trying to privatize and thankfully still haven't (Social Security)

Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter

Yeah, tea-revolting puritanical peasants. They would tar-and-feather the tax collector, blame the victim, and then call themselves the victim. They'd break the laws and call themselves law-abiding citizens.

I think that if you can't violate any of a large list of rules and can only do things that represent the wishes of the people you represent, there's not much room for experimenting.

Make breakdancing a requirement for any appointment to the Supreme Court; ban congressmen from using the letter "e" on Fridays, appoint a five-year-old to come up with ideas.

The American Government is no fun, and it's boring and predictable.

Any other developed country wouldn't even dream of privatizing half the stuff we already:

99% of the stuff that is "privatized" was never public in the first place in the US.

A) Have privatized and keep stopping from even having a public alternative (Health Care)

Medicare/Medicaid? We have experience with government-run health care before. It's not pretty, efficient, or cost-effective.

B) Are trying to privatize and thankfully still haven't (Social Security)

I'm in favor of privatizing SS at least in part. The system falls apart by the time I turn 50. Gone are the days where we had 10 workers to 1 retiree as was the case in 1950, we cannot simply ignore the problem any more. The more we ignore the issue thinking we cannot change the system the closer the situation becomes where people my father's age will have very limited time to collect anything and people my age will never collect at all.

Even the Government Accountability Office is saying it's unsustainable in its current form. If they're the ones saying it, there's no hiding there's a problem.

And now comes Tomu citing Krugman about how we should just ignore everybody talking about SS.

But there's the funding. You have the money.

South Africa and Mexico have created theirs in the past decade. Britain, Germany, France and other Western European countries did so in the aftermath of WW 2, when they were broke. You have no excuse to not have a well-planned universal health care system. And if you fear the loss of HM Os and that frilly stuff, you can look at Germany's model, which melds state-funded care with privately-funded insurance schemes. State-funding merely supplements that of the private system.

It's a shame that so few of those things taken for granted are true, really...

So that means that freedom of speech is bad, democracy is bad, economic growth is usually bad, tyranny is good, wasting money is good, dictatorship is good, fraud is good, oppression is good, and people in a position of government should get special titles and/or neat hats?

I don't want to live in whatever country says all that.

Zersk: That seems to be the reasoning :/

Fun fact: I have a friend in the UK who received long-term intensive medical care, including long hospital stays, when they thought he was dying from familial insomnia. During one of those hospital stays, it was discovered that he actually had a brain tumor, which was subsequently removed, and he hasn't had problems since. This was all done via their public health care system, and he will never have to pay a dime for the care he received.

Over here in the US, an artist I'm familiar with has cancer as well. Our (privately-run, for-profit) health care system has kicked her off of chemo because she can't afford the treatments anymore, and there's a good chance she will die before next year is out. Unless she somehow wins the lottery (and thus become one of the "profitable" cases they cater to) or moves to Canada.

Oh, but America's health care system is just so superior. Much better than that of those godless commies socialists...

Right.

[up] Also, the American system somehow costs the government about 18% of its total expenditure. A private healthcare system actually costs the government that doesn't even directly fund it!

With that expenditure, there's no issue with a government-funded system for America.
