Hey guys, I was looking at info on Space Marines in Warhammer 40k and I found something that reminded me of IBO's Alaya-Vinyana. Check it out:

Black Carapace Phase 19: The most distinctive implant, it resembles a film of black plastic that is implanted directly beneath the skin of the Marine's torso in sheets. It hardens on the outside and sends invasive neural bundles into the Marine's body. After the organ has matured the recipient is then fitted with neural sensors and interface points cut into the carapace's surface.[1][2a][3] This allows a Space Marine to interface directly with his Power Armour. Without the Black Carapace many of the systems of the power armour will not function. While driving the vehicles of the Chapter, special spinal interface plugged into power armour and Black Carapace to provide the Space Marine an intuitive 'feel' for vehicles systems and controls, literally making him a part of his vehicle.[7]

A plot bunny that came to me just now.

Amuro fails to stop Axis.

With the Earth devastated and plunged into mass famine, the Federation collapses practically overnight and the Sides descend into cutthroat infighting over filling in the power vacuum. EFSF remnants wanting to restore order, Neo-Zeon remnants wanting to restore the Principality, Neo-Zeon remnants wanting to carry on Char's legacy, Neo-Zeon remnants wanting to carry on Zeon Deikun's legacy, independents wanting nothing to do with the above, third parties fostering the conflict for their own ends (hello, Anaheim)... it's a gigantic clusterfuck of anarchy and backstabbing that reduces the Earth Sphere into rubble. When the dust settles, the few still intact colonies decide there's nothing left worth fighting over and fly off to Jupiter.

Thing is, the Jovians watched the whole thing go down and concluded that the Earthers are all crazed warmongers who bring nothing but ruin. To that end, those colonies that made it to Jupiter were summarily gassed and the Jovian leadership declared the Exclusion Doctrine: any and all direct or indirect contact with Earth is forbidden on pain of death. Any radio signals from an Earth Sphere source are to receive no response and any vessel that tries to cross into the asteroid belt is to be intercepted and destroyed without warning. For all intents and purposes, the inner Solar System is placed under quarantine.

Fast-forward 300 years, Cosmic Era. The Earth Sphere have mostly recovered, albeit with great difficulty - partly due to the Jovians' treatment of them. Predictably, there's no small amount of resentment Earthers have towards Jovians, along with paranoia of what those crazed spacenoids have been up to for the past centuries. This paranoia is what resulted in the creation of the Coordinators this time around, with some scientists having dug up historical records about Cyber-Newtypes and decided to perfect the process as a trump card against a possible Jovian invasion. Of course, Blue Cosmos stirred shit up because they have a particular hatred towards enhanced humans of any kind due to the fact that the Collapse was caused by one.

With no access to Jupiter, the Earth Sphere has limited helium-3 available, hence the decline in fusion reactors and beam weapons. And as soon as the war began, one of the first things ZAFT did was to start excavations in Von Braun and Granada. You see, after Anaheim tried to manipulate the Collapse to their own ends one too many times, a pissed third party nuked their headquarters and bombed all their branch facilities - but historical records retained their locations. ZAFT's excavation efforts are after whatever lost technology that could lie buried beneath the rubble and OMNI know that too, so the Moon basically got turned into a WWI battleground in space as the two sides are continuously trying to dislodge each other.

With the Earth being threatened from space once more, OMNI decide to take a final step of desperation and resurrect an old legend. A legend that already protected Earth once before.

Gundam.

Good for you because nobody else does, on the grounds that the Jovians don't have the resources and manpower to do anything other than sitting at home.

So, I'm right now I'm working on filing off the serial numbers off an old Gundam fanfic - mostly because it has one character from the series as part of a main cast of OCs and features the supernatural branch of the Preventers.

Everyone cringe now.

However, I have not come to ask you to beta or anything so awkward. Instead, I'm merely looking for some help with renaming some stuff, such as how many better names can we come with to replace mobile dolls?

I'm also cool with just having fun with this exercise with any other gundam series.

Drones? Golems?

An army of golems run by an ancient, shadowy cabal of businessmen with a vaguely Germanic name?

... Yyyeah, might want to reconsider that. Or just put it in a Valvrave fanfic instead. One or the other.

What's precedent ever done for us?

Automatons? Mobile Drones? Unmanned Suits (Possibly shortened to U Ss)?

If you're implying antisemitism there, you do realize that 99.999% of people don't know that the word 'golem' is of Jewish origin, right?

Wait, really? I've only over heard the word golem used when talking about Jewish mysticism.

[up][up]I know it wasn't intentional, but giving an organisation like Romefeller weapons from Jewish folklore just ticks a few too many boxes.

[up][up]I've seen it used fairly regularly in assorted fantasy genre works.

[up][up][up]That's because the idea of a golem does originate from there.

Namely, a humanoid figure made of clay and blood with the Jewish word for truth carved into its forehead. The word serves as its on/off switch: erase the first letter to change its meaning to 'dead' and the golem goes inert.

[up][up]And I was referring to the fact that giving a highly obscure Jewish name used all the time in fantasy stories without knowledge of its origin to a weapon used by an influential conspiracy group shouldn't automatically mean that the author is an advocate of Jewish world domination conspiracy theories. It's Insane Troll Logic fueled by Political Correctness Gone Mad.

"Hey, here's an idea I had, what do you think?"

"Uh, you might want to use a different name, it's kind of offensive."

"What? No one even knows the origin of that name."

"Yeah, actually, a lot of people do, and it's full of Unfortunate Implications."

"Whatever, I don't care, those people are just oversensitive anyway."

Flawless logic 10/10

I personally like the name Golem, but I can see the issues with the Romefeller connection - let's put that down to another thing Romefeller makes worse. (I honestly forgot that they were the ones who first started using mobile dolls - mostly because I find Romefeller very forgettable.) For my own purposes, I really like the umanned suits, especially with shortened form of U S.

So, as a transparent distraction away from golems I bring you Tallgeese, a longtime favorite of easy to mock names. (I personally picked Hannibal's Chariot, but I would like to see what you guys come up with that isn't based solely on freeword association.)

If you're going to go with "unmanned suits", I would recommend using "UMS" over "US" as the abbreviation. Three Letter Acronyms generally sound better, and there's less chance of it being confused with the word "us" (or the United States). Of course, then you run the risk of having people think it stands for "unmanned mobile suits" or something instead of just "unmanned suits".

Edit: huh, three letter acronym isn't a trope, but it's definitely a thing. Oh well, you get the idea.

Good to know about the three rule when making fictional or real life acronyms.

Thanks for all your help!

I know this isn't that important, but hasn't the use of the Golem evolved past the Jewish connotations and are now common fantasy robots?

Much like how zombies started off as voodoo animated slaves and are now one of the most popular franchise monsters ever?

True. I guess I'm just annoyed at how often it happens that I say something completely innocuous and suddenly get yelled at. Doesn't matter I meant no offense to anyone, still get yelled at as if I did.
