How do you feel about a nostalgic 90s film made in the 10s?

I don't know about anyone else, but I could really go for a nostalgic 90s film similar to how the 80s have been treated in films like "The Wedding Singer", "Hot Tub Time Machine", etc.

Personally, I'm tired of seeing so many 80s films. I want to see 90s fashion, hairstyles, and trends in a cute self-aware way. Is that so strange?

It's bound to become popular any year now. A few of them already exist, actually.

Let's be honest, the nostalgia of any time period usually refers to the stuff from two decades before (e.g.: 50s nostalgia in the 70s, 60s in the 80s, etc.).

In other words, any day now.

They'll probably start coming out around now. Maybe a little bit more towards 2015 though. I think it would be interesting. This would also be the first decade that I remember.

Lol, I was about to say that there were tons of 80's nostalgia movies out in the nineties, but then I remembered that those were all actual reruns from the 80's. Oops.

We nineties kids got all the reruns.

I still cannot figure out a single thing that distinguished the 90s stylistically, so I'd welcome a film like this.

i wouldn't make it, though

  • Grunge
  • Mainstream acceptance of hip-hop
  • A different kind of synthpop from the 80s
  • Apathy
  • Bill Clinton
  • Romantic comedies
  • Bill Clinton's wiener
  • OJ Simpson
  • Tom Hanks
  • Coming-of-age movies (more so than the 80s)
  • Sports movies (DEFINITELY more so than the 80s)
  • Sports movies that were coming of age stories
  • Endless sequels to The Land Before Time
  • Nickelodeon
  • Cartoon Network
  • According to some demotivational poster a friend sent me yesterday, floppy disks
  • The rise of the internet
  • Kevin Smith
  • The Macarena

Now combine that all into a movie.

OJ Simpson

More like "The OJ Simpson Trial"(and that white Ford Bronco police chase). No one remembers that OJ was a Heisman winning RB from Syracuse who played for the Bills and is in the Hall of Fame, and was in all three Naked Gun movies...

Except those who grew up in the 80s or earlier, and Football fans...

I would call Barbershop something of a 90's-esque movie made in the 00's, but I guess it is only vaguely and I suppose people hadn't really left the 90's mindset at the time of it's creation.

I will say this - black 90's culture was distinctive enough that I'd definitely recognize it immediately in a film. On television, I'd love to see something like Everybody Hates Chris about the 90's as apposed to the 70's.

[up] An "Everybody Hates Chris" 90s show does sound pretty interesting.

They should make a movie about how Nickelodeon started to pretty much suck, or a movie about a kid in the 90's whose shunned for disliking Nirvana although he appears very grungy himself, so he is taunted by the ever-so 90's and early 2000's term "poser". or petty crime kids who still find leather jackets cool and sell stolen walkmen's and Cd's somehow ending up in a drug chain.

They should make a movie about how Nickelodeon started to pretty much suck,
Or maybe about someone who wants to bring back Nickelodeon theaters

a movie about a kid in the 90's whose shunned for disliking Nirvana although he appears very grungy himself, so he is taunted by the ever-so 90's and early 2000's term "poser".
People don't still use the term poser today?

or petty crime kids who still find leather jackets cool and sell stolen walkmen's and Cd's somehow ending up in a drug chain.
Maybe it's just because I have Kevin Smith on the brain right now, but the first thing I thought of with this was Jay and Silent Bob (even though they don't wear leather jackets).

Well, Kevin Smith is inspirational to me because he makes low budget films about silly things and a lot of people still really like them, but then again a lot of people don't like them, but that's how most things that make it big are.

The good of the nineties is outweighed by the bad. A film about something good from the nineties would be alright, a film about the 90s would be terrible, unless its goal was to remind everyone with a Nostalgia Filter why it was so bad, like Horrible Histories or Angry Video game Nerd.

Part of me fears media of 90s nostalgia just for the potential for hack jokes you know will show up in it. A sitcom would be the worst:

Son: Hey dad I downloaded this MIDI file from the internet, its like a song.

Father: Getting music from the information superhighway, what nonsense. Next you'll be saying you'll get movies from there too!

Sister: Mom, dad he ruined my life that little brat!

Brother: Oh come on she's so popular at school, what could I do? Its like ruining Star Wars, its not possible.

Mother: The president involved in a sex scandal... oh my goodness. I can't imagine the country's reputation getting any worse than this.

Grandfather: Unbelievable, gas at 1.50 a gallon. Talk about gouging at the pump!

Uncle: Look when I was at Harvard, my friend Barry O and I had a pact that we'd run off and form a band if we got the chance. Unfortunately he wussed out. Now I'm the 3rd top rated rock/funk musician in this county, and he's dropped off the face of the earth.

Not saying it can't work, but I suspect so much potential for shallow parody and a lack of BTTF's charm that I have my doubts.

I will admit to likely enjoying a sequence of some college student bringing up their essay on Osama Bin Laden and his/her family assuming that's the name of a soccer player.

Thing is the 60s kind of were terrible. Where did you live in then? No matter, you saw assassinations, unwanted wars and whether it bugged you or not did not change the fact the two biggest bully nations could destroy the whole world in their crossfire should they ever go beyond posturing. Don't forget inflation, unemployment either or the fact colonialism was not far enough on its way out.

Godzilla was demoted to fighting King Kong and got an awful sidekick. That awful Casino Royal was showing along with Manos The Hands Of Fate, The Wild World Of Batwoman...this goes for any decade. We shouldn't pretend it was all Antonio Rocca and 2001 Space Odyssey.
