[up]I liked them.

We still have the Epilogue for that arc left titled "Gotham Girl: Year One"

The end of issue 5 was so weird that I'm waiting to see how its resolved in issue 6 before I pass judgement on the whole thing.

I'm pretty confident that the next arc is going to be better though. Mikel Janin's art is always fantastic, and the Batman teaming up with Catwoman, Bronze Tiger, and the Ventriloquist to fight Bane sounds like a lot of fun.

I Am Suicide should be fun. I really like that title for some reason.

Also Gotham & Gotham Girl went by to fast. I mean they didn't get much screen time before shit hit the fan. Still I knew he was unworthy, cause Gotham ain't for everyone Gotham.

I think the Gotham arc needed another issue between issues 4 and 5. It felt like I was missing something, even reading them back-to-back.

Catching Pokemon is for chumps when you've got a Rogues Gallery.

I really like how they inserted Nolanesque elements this time around, most notably the drums at 2:01 and the loud "whoosh" as Batman's cape envelops the screen.

Poison Ivy's very first appearance is pretty funny, looking back on it. She was one of four female villains who had never been seen before—the other three were Dragon Fly, Silken Spider, and Tiger Moth—and she wanted to grow like poison ivy in the public's mind and be declared the number 1 female criminal in the world compared to them.

She... succeeded, shall we say. The other three only appeared again in 2007, 41 years after their debut in 1966, twice in 2008, and never again.

The Protomen enhanced my life.

To be honest though, Ivy made the ridiculous-sounding ability of telepathically controlling plant life into an villainous example of Heart Is an Awesome Power.

The funniest part of Poison Ivy's debut is when she gives the other three villainesses a rigged crown at the same time, the crown shocks them with electricity, and Ivy says it won't kill them, it'll just hold them in place while the police arrives for them. And they just stand there holding the crown and going 'YIII-IIII-IIIIII'.

She also had like zero to do with plants other than the name, the color green, and crawling walls 'like ivy' in what frankly felt like an afterthought.

As far as Batman villains debut goes, it was pretty lame. Joker, Ra's, Two-Face, Riddler, Penguin, all got pretty badass first appearances, whether in the Golden or Modern Ages, but even other Silver Age villains like Mr. Freeze or Clayface II got better starts than Ivy. Hers was just lame; charming in a kooky way but embarrassing.

[up] His real name, according to DC's Who's Who, is Charles Brown. I'm not even kidding.

[up][up] Neil Gaiman eventually connected her up with Jason Woodrue, The Floronic Man, didn't he? I seem to remember him writing her updated origin for the old Secret Origins series, in which she started out as a fairly normal girl who had a teenaged crush on Batman, then studied botany under Woodrue, who experimented on her. Then she mutated, went nuts and became Poison Ivy.

[up]Batman and Robin even though it is a terrible movie it had Jason Woodrue involved in Poison Ivy's origin.

Originally, Poison Ivy's origin was just she was a kook who suited herself up and commited crimes Because Fame and Fortune. Shortly after someone realized how lame that was and gave her a tragic origin where a former lover betrayed her and locked her in a tomb with some strange herbs or something that gave her plant based abilities. I don't remember the specifics, I read that a long time ago.

Anyway, it was only after the Crisis Gaiman worked the Jason Woodrue origin in, and Ivy explained she had bullshitted the whole Pre Crisis origin with the lover because she liked to tell lies about her past.

Not to brag or anything, but I spoke with a comic store employee today on Twitter and they sent me photos of some (not all) interior pages of Detective Comics #940, including the final scene. I also agreed not to spoil the issue in exchange for this info.

I'll include some very non-specific but checkable facts from it so you'll know I'm telling the truth on release:

1. The final scene contains the words "field", "primed", "Colony", and "deeply".

2. There at least two characters in the final scene.

3. A character who is not a 'Tec regular but who is leading their own book right now makes an appearance.

4. There is a panel featuring an unmasked Cass with a bolt of lightning flashing behind her.

5. The Night of the Monster Men logo at the very end is in black font with a white outline.

6. Two characters who have appeared in the current Batman series show up.

The reason I'm mentioning this is that I'm excited about the future of this book and want to share it, I guess, but can't right now. Even though I really, badly want to. So this is a compromise of sorts. I know how much of a tease this is, and I'm sorry, but I had to say something about it. grin

Cross-posted from the DCEU thread.

So the trailer for a new Prohibition-era crime thriller starring Ben Affleck, Live By Night, was just released several days ago and is now currently popping up everywhere on You Tube.

Many a comment expressed their disappointment that this wasn't the new Batman film, so one dedicated fan made up a particularly skilled mock trailer in record time.

Detective Comics caps off a great first arc with an emotional issue that doesn't tie everything up, but leaves a ton of plot threads for the future. I'm very excited to see where this book goes.

[up]I did not see that last page coming. holy shit. This goes deeper than I thought. Fitting though that oz is in both of the books in the 900's

I guess he was the person who teleported Futures End Tim away from the Beyond future too

[up] IKR? I don't know how everything fits together yet, but I'm so intrigued to see how it does. Detective just became a key Rebirth book, and that's pretty awesome.

the key rebirth books are now the books with the highest number and the flash books.

so people who read the book who do you think is in the other 2 cells? I've seen people guessing the real Kon who is a clone of superman and lex, and the real Bart who is the grandson of barry and iris. But one of the could also be Futures End Tim who was taken from the Batman Beyond future

"Night of the Monster Men" is off to a pretty good start. Lots of callbacks, references, and foreshadowing. The first two parts feature a lot of stuff from all the titles involved, so it all feels very cohesive and not choppy, like a true crossover should. It's not quite as light as I expected, but I like it so far.

I checked Kite Man's first appearance in 1960 and his real name of Charles Brown wasn't revealed in that, meaning it was made up later. I figured as much. Golden Age writers like Bill Finger don't strike me as the kind of people who make those kind of pop culture references.
