Why is Jack Chick so worried about homosexual marriage if under his interpretation of Christianity no matter what he is gonna win in the end? Besides being a moron of course?

Well, he may simply be sincerely trying to save other people's souls. His beliefs are deeply mistaken, well past the point of self-parody; but that does not necessarily mean that he is malicious.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

The road to atheism (or agnosticism/paganism/etc.) is paved with good intentions.

@Carc: Except he is not. Or at least he doesn't appear too, (only ever been one interview with him) His tracts seem to take absolute joy in his idea that people not like him will be damned to hell.

Perhaps it is meant as a messed up variant of "scare them straight"?

Or perhaps he genuinely gets his jollies by fantasizing about people who disagree with him being tortured for all eternity. But the first interpretation is more charitable.

Maybe, I don't know. I've read them and they seem hateful enough that I could believe the second one, the first one though I can also understand people thinking about him.

I was asking why he seems to actually fear it though? Cause in that tract is doesn't just seem to be anger, it seems to be genuine fear.

It is entirely possible for someone's views on punishing others and feelings of righteousness to be so dysfunctional and conflated that there is no real difference between the two possible explanations.

I am fascinated by the mindset of Jack Chick and his ilk. He seems to find no incongruity between his God being a God of infinite love and the vast majority of human beings burning eternally in hellfire.

How does that even work?

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.

Doublethink is inherent in almost all prejudice, but especially that motivated by fundamentalist Christianity. It becomes increasingly impossible to reconcile a God of love with what is in essence hatred, so the most tortured ratiocinations have to be thought up. Just look at the ineffably ridiculous Conservative Bible Project.

EDIT: This isn't necessarily to say that Christian bigotry is worse or better than any other kind - I'm not qualified to make that judgement, but Christian bigotry does require one to tie oneself in intellectual knots one might otherwise not have to.

The view centers on the notion that God is infinitely more morally important than humans. That's why I see God as Eldritch. It matters what humans do, but it doesn't matter what is done to humans. That is, humans are morally culpable for things that they do, but God is not morally culpable for things He does to humans. Hell, nobody is morally culpable for things they do to humans - people who believe in this ideology tend to believe that murder is not a crime of murder against the victim, but a crime of disobedience against God. That is, murder is bad because God said so, not because it gets somebody dead. It leaves me inclined to believe that God is a great cosmic narcissist.

Actually yeah. Like, my relatives in the Midwest are considerably more extreme than their own church, and even they think the guy is out there.

At the same time, there are depressingly many actual followers. They like to hand out tracts at colleges while shouting loudly.

Like the nuts last fall at my college who set up a whole sound system on the campus lawn to pump out christian rock about gods love while they screamed at every woman on campus for being sluts.

Oh well, more for the rest of us.

It was that apparently they assumed any and all women on campus, regardless of dress, were college students, therefore whores.

Nevermind being a midwest college, we have at least a decent sized amount of christians (even if a lot of them arent fundamentalist in the least) on campus

Don't these people need permission to be on campus? If so, who keeps giving them permission?

Haldo: 1 Corinthians 11:6 says women should cover their heads else be a disgrace/be disgraced. I think there's also something in Leviticus about women covering their heads whilst praying. That's all I can think of, which isn't really applicable here!
