Desura, Steam for indie games?

Kind of weird how this thing doesn't have page nor thread.

Anyway, I guess its minor compared to steam considering it seems to sponsor indie royale at least judging by how many games there have indie royale keys.

Anyway, point was, I made this thread to ask you guys if you know whether it is worth to get desura account or not? :P

I made one to use my keys obtained through the humble indie bundle and the indie royale. It really is not such a huge deal to make or not an account, it is nice the catalog of indie games.

Lots of good obscure games too. Heck, whole thing is obscure considering how much you hear about it tongue

I've gotten a Desura account.

Though the only game I've gotten on it is Dead Meets Lead, and that was after it became free. Haven't tried it yet...been meaning to do so, to elaborate on the developer's commentary about the game, its development, and its commercialization.

If I ever do get an Indie Royale bundle, I'll probably redeem it on Desura since I can.

The one big question I have with Desura is this: Do I need to open Desura to run stuff? Alternatively, can I go indefinitely without connecting to the internet to play games I have downloaded through Desura?

Considering that Desura client logging screen has offline mode button along with log in and cancel buttons, I would say so tongue According to my computer savvy friend who seems to prefer Desura to Steam on some matters, it DOES have some advantages over steam, but I'm not sure what.

Anyway, on games I currently have on Desura:(excluding indie royale and humble bundle games I put there)

Battle For Wesnoth Well, this one is free game, and I had it before without it being on Desura, but I always had problems at keeping up with new versions so I got it on desura so I can get updates faster.

UFO Alien Invasion Its... Fan remake of Xcom. It is its own game though in many respects and seems interesting. Anyway, got it because I was interested in seeing what it is like. I like it from what I've seen.

Xenonauts (alpha) Got it, even though I hate fan remakes/spiritual successors that are hyped as so by journalists/other fans of series tongue Still, it seems interesting at the moment, but its rather early alpha... Loading times are painful xD

Abuse old EA game that is freeware now. And it is good one, it seems to be run and gun game.

Dragon Fantasy Its homage to old JRPG... I like it from what little I've played.

StarDrive alpha Another alpha... It reminds me of Master of orion/Star control in some respects. Also, alien portraits are BEAUTIFULLY done, when I saw one at Kickstarter (yeah, this one got funded through kickstarter I was shocked to learn that it was animated and in game.

Naev I uninstalled this soon after installing it and trying it out because nowadays when I play these kinds of games I'm bothered by not remembering name of the game like this i played as kid..

I shall remain I uninstalled this too soon after trying it out, at this point its kinda crude.

BTW, I'm amazed that Desura uninstall allows you to delete Desura files and game from desura when you want to. Thats something I hate with steam, steam just uninstalls the game and leaves steam game files on your computer tongue

Now bought Snorms(alpha), Project Black Sun, Deadly30 and Unepic.

But yeah, nobody wants to discuss Desura games? And I thought Indie games were popular or something. Seems to apply only ones like Minecraft xD

I had Project Black Sun bookmarked on Gamers Gate.

^^Soooo, I should promote Desura or something? O-o

That would possibly help with deadness of Indie Royale thread tongue

^Why does it not have proper trope page anyway? Project Black Sun gives red link .-.

Meh, I prefer Steam. One online game platform is enough for me to keep track of, same reason I hate origin.

Same reason why I didn't start to use Desura before it turned out that only way to try out Xenonauts was through it tongue

But thing is, Desura has some selection that Steam doesn't have and never probably will. It doesn't have exact same AAA games(it does have few, but very few :P) and Steam will never have all obscure indie games there.

I do know that Desura is DRM-agnostic, and based on that, as well as what I've heard of Steam sometimes unexpectedly blocking various users' accounts, I probably prefer Desura. I also like to support the Indie Game scene.

The reason you should be wary of Origin isn't that it's another online game distribution service, but rather (as I've heard) that it's very intrusive and restrictive.

Desura is great for acquiring more obscure indie titles. And generally it allows all of its programs to be run without the client (IIRC).

Origin was also acussed of instaling what was basically a malware that checked what programs you have installed in yopur computer, what you run, programs running in the background and sending the information to Origin.

^ Yeah, and that does suck. AFAIK not even Steam does that (correct me if I'm wrong).

No Steam nor any other digital distribution plataform except for Origin does that AFAIK.

@Stevebat: Yeah, it allows that, it even allows you to download zip files of the games.

I kind of want to talk about some games on Desura, but how I can do that since people here don't use it? Its not like I can promote them and somehow make people talk about them, if I create invidual threads for games, they just end up like Indie Royale thread or my Molecat Twist thread tongue

Seems that it's kinder to people with horrible connections like me. Unlike Steam (and it's offline never worked for me). Also, it's DRM-lessness makes it actually appealing. Unlike Steam.

Problem is, said horrible connection prevents me from downloading it at the moment. If I'd know about this at the beginning of the week (before I hit the 5GB limit of my surf stick), it would have been no problem.

But I'll sure keep it in mind.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

Hmm, yeah, Desura does have some things it does better than Steam, at least to my computer tech savvy friend(though I think he dislikes Steam just because it isn't on Linux).

I want to talk about Unepic, do you think anyone has heard of it so thread can be made? What would be good thread name to attract people to actually see what it is about? tongue

I don't know if it is widely known but it is a good name and with a good description in the first post it can sparks people interest.

Thaaats my problem, I'm not good at that :P "Unepic" won't do since people ignore that kind of thread names unless its known game, and I need somehow to make people think it might be interesting without them being scared off by my grammar.

Seriously, how do I create a thread about that game which people will read? Its awesome game D:
