Which I believe would be a reasonable... uh... reason for it to be a distinct sub-trope. A Mechanically Unusual Class tends to be tough to balance since it's outside the norm, so the fact they tend to be useless seems distinct enough to be a subtrope.

I've seen a ykttw long ago called Perpendicular Balance that should be related to this.

Bumping, if I found it

Well

Quirky Bard found in: 446 articles, excluding discussions.

Since January 1, 2012 this article has brought 1,024 people to the wiki from non-search engine links.

That seems like a lot. But reading the examples itself almost all the examples are self-imposed difficulty characters you have to choose to use, full of explanations how they are Lethal Joke Characters with specific setups or at high levels, or 'Averted' for useful bards.

Yeah, the thing about the numbers is that there's such wild misuse and random use that they're not good numbers.

Honestly, we should be embarrassed by those inbounds... this is one of the worst, most confusing, schizophrenic articles we have.

So what, axe the whole thing and start anew?

[up] So yeah, that YKTTW is the same idea as what Quirky Bard currently technically is, but it's not very well done (and none of the examples have sufficient context).

Going to Sandbox up a new version of the trope that's currently under Quirky Bard.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuump.

So yeah, I'm thinking the best thing to do would be move the trope currently under Quirky Bard to a new name (I still lean towards Useless Useful Class), and turn Spoony Bard into a disambig (and possibly False Redlink) for The Bard and Useless Useful Class, possibly William Shakespeare as well.

[up]I agree, because as it currently stands, the definition of Quirky Bard is a confused mish-mash between those two tropes (which is essentially The Same But More Specific instance of a Useless Useful Class being a bard). Or it's just references to the meme, which really isn't what we're after here.

Bump.

I still stand by the "False Red Link Spoony Bard and make it a disambig" idea. The False Redlink isn't necessary per se, but it would prevent people from still using it. Spoony Bard is, admittedly a very catchy title for a trope... the problem is it's just really unclear.

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally want some movement on this one. This page is seriously a blight on TV Tropes and really does need to be fixed in some way. The earlier fix of randomly renaming it just wound up making a monster that plain contradicts itself in addition to being unclear and unfocused.

Bump. Honestly, the page is now worse than it was when it first went to TRS, and that's just sad.

... I feel like this thread is just too damn big and people are scared by its length. Maybe letting it get purged and making a new, more focused thread is a good idea.
