Well, this is the Internet. Incessant bitching is par for the course. But in the end, it's people who play Bio Ware's games. Contrary to what they may say, it's not because they expect the games to suck, but because they expect the games to be good.

They only bitch to look cool.

I eventually left the BSN because it made me feel gross after DA2. Haven't been back in several happy months.

They are not the perfect beings of cold logic and infinite understanding that we are.

[up]x4 'Tis weird. The creators made the Reapers and the Catalyst. Then the Catalyst somehow made the creators become the Reapers, I guess by making the Reapers harvest them.

No creators, you are the synthetics.

And then the precursors was a reaper.

I just seriously can't get over them making a synthetic being to specifically study synthetic rebellion to prevent synthetic rebellion.

From what I can gather, the people who created the Catalyst created the Reaper ships. The Catalyst presumably took control of the Reapers and somehow forced its creators into becoming a part of them.

But yeah, it is a bit of a "Wait, what?" thing. Yet another plot hole.

Maybe it used indoctrinated servants. Or synthetics. I'm gonna go with it used synthetics to do it.

Edit: [up] "Yo dawg, I heard you didn't want synthetics to rebel, so I made a rebellious synthetic to study synthetics rebelling."

Okay, so if the Reapers didn't exist yet, then how did it force them to become Reapers?

Because that first species, as advanced as it was, didn't have any rudimentary form of logic. When the AI they created told them "all synthetic life(AI's included) will eventually turn on their creators and kill them, so you need to let me kill you first to save all organic life", that race just said: "that makes sense, go right ahead."

They had sufficiently advanced technology to create Reapers, they didn't even receive help from precursors like the Cycle races, and yet when they try to make an AI, they end up making the Catalyst. Epic fail.

Jotun, the Catalyst mentions those things in the final conversation, which you can watch by looking at the video I posted here

It says its creators made the Reapers, but didn't approve of the Catalyst's solution.

So the Catalyst rebelled and...put them into the Reapers...or something like that. I guess the creators only made the mechanical shells.

They were probably dumb enough to give it access to mechs. Again, textbook example of A.I. Is a Crapshoot.

[up]Sounds more like the creators were kinda stupid.

Maybe they deserved to be killed off by Synthetics?

[up][up][up] I see problems where you don't. Introducing a generic A.I. Is a Crapshoot as the motivation of the Reapers and suddeny having an organics vs synthetics theme thrown against my face is not good storytelling in my opinion. You seem to value things differently, if I read it correctly, you value things by seeing if they make sense in story or not. You liked the endings more when you realized they were good for the galaxy, for example.

I expect stories to do more than making sense internally. Higher standards, perhaps.

Note: I'm not criticizing you, just trying to answer because you wondered about the negativity.

Pretty sure that's how I value things too, yet there's no love lost for me when it comes to the endings.

Anyways, I found the synthesis explanation hilarious.

Casey Hudson and Mac Walters read fan feedback

-Hmm...they are whining because Synthesis "does not make sense"

-We will have to explain it to them...so how do we begin?

-Oh, like this: "Shepard's organic energy is used to reshape the matrix of life..."

So...I played through everything to get to the ending. In hindsight, should not have done that, since it took me around 3 hours or so.

I picked Destroy. The revelation that the Catalyst turned its unwilling creators into the first Reaper turned me from considering the Control/Synthesis ending to deciding "This whole system needs to be put down."

The ending was better. I will probably buy DLC in the future.

Despite four crashes on a game that almost never crashes (seriously, I think the game was trying to tell me something) and two stupid deaths, I've completed the final two levels and viewed the Extended Cut. I haven't read the past ten or so pages, so other people have probably already said stuff like this, but here's my thoughts:

  1. Overall, better than I thought it was going to be. At least the Best Destroy ending is. As far as I'm concerned, no other ending exists. But the ending still isn't good.
  2. The number one reason why it's better: Bioware lied. They changed the endings. The Mass Relays aren't destroyed. The Normandy isn't stranded. Shepard isn't knocked out before being abandoned. I don't know why they're still trying to save face.
  3. Tali's goodbye and pleas for Shepard not to die during the beam run section were actually really, really sad. It looked a lot like she was tearing up through that mask.
  4. Back to the stupid: why did Harbinger just let Shepard and Tali have their moment and NOT shoot them both? And why were they hiding behind a tank? What the hell is a tank going to do if he actually decides to shoot at you with one of those dreadnought destroying lasers?
  5. Why didn't Harbinger shoot the Normandy when it was literally right in front of him? I honestly expected better of you, Harby. You used to be such a cool villain. He went from a Dangerously Genre-Savvy badass and The Chessmaster to the literally the embodiment and legacy of the universe's dumbest beings.
  6. I got killed by Marauder Shields. And it wasn't on purpose.
  7. The Catalyst's new dialogue makes me want to punch it in the face more than I did before. You ask it how Synthesis actually works / why it's killing everyone / how the war with the Reapers isn't a war, and it just answers with some philosophical bullshit. Are you kidding me? Plus, I'm not even given the opportunity to say "you exist, doesn't that prove you wrong"?
  8. The Catalyst's makers are the dumbest beings in the known universe. "Huh, how do we stop synthetics from killing us? I know! Let's make a synthetic and give it godlike power!." Actually that might explain why Harbinger didn't shoot you...
  9. Picked Destroy again. Because seriously, fuck that kid, fuck playing god, fuck lying to the galaxy, fuck raping everyone's DNA, fuck Walter's Author Tract, and fuck the Reapers. The additional scenes of krogan and asari rejoicing as the Reapers die are nice.
  10. The slideshow was better than not having a slideshow at all, but I was highly disappointed that it didn't actually act like a Fallout New Vegas esque slideshow. Oh well, at least I know that the krogan are having tons of babies and the quarians are living in peace on a metropolis on Rannoch.
  11. As mentioned, rewriting the destruction of the relays and the stranding of the Normandy is good.
  12. That scene of Tali debating whether or not to put Shepard's name on the wall- that was actually really sad too.
  13. Bioware lied about another thing: I didn't get to reunite with my crew. Well, there was no reunion scene. Why Bioware? WHY!?
  14. And finally, one more flat-out change to the ending: that final text box doesn't say to buy DLC anymore. Instead it has a letter from the Mass Effect team. Better than the last one I guess.

[up]Yep. Most of what you said has been covered, but I'm sure everyone is willing to discuss anything you want to bring up or question.

Especially if it involves the phrase "Fuck the Catalyst" tongue

Damn this hour. The thread is already becoming silent.

Well, I am slightly justified, I think, as West Colorado Springs is on fire right now... And if continues to spread, I'll be in one of the next rounds of the evacuation orders.
