It's currently got 75 out in English, but I think the Japanese release is on something like 100, so if the translator decides to pull their finger out that could change pretty quickly.

Okay, so I read the first three chapters of Youkai Shoujo. When I hit chapter 3, I had the biggest "what the fuck am I reading?" moment I've had in quite a while. That's all I'll say about it here since I don't want to derail. (Though I don't think this series has a trope page or forum thread; once I'm further along maybe I'll make one.)

The translator at 4chan made a correction: the hornet girl did not say that Kimihito was a killer, but rather she was introducing herself. Wait for it... Kiira the Killer Bee. *sigh* Great job, Okayado. I wonder what's the grudge she's having against him, maybe some stupid crap like, he threw a rock at a hornet nest when he was 5 or something like it.

For what little I've read, I enjoy Nurse Hitomi's Infirmary's art style (with all those gummy faces and black/white contrast) and the characters; I'm just bored with the trite high school setting. At least the girls in Monmusu are all in their late teens-early twenties (I think?).

At one point in Hitomi George Romero shows up as an ogre and fights a horde of zombies.

Say, what do you guys think of Okayado coining the term "Monoeye" as the general name for all one-eyed humanlike races, from the human-sized ones to the giant-sized Cyclopes^note No, that's not a typo. The plural of "cyclops" can be either "cyclopes" (to be accurate to the Greek root) or "cyclopses" (i.e. standard English pluralization).? I'll have to admit, it does make sense if you want to keep "Cyclops" as specifically limited to one-eyed giants rather than all one-eyed humanlike beings, but it seems kinda awkward to me.

To be fair, it makes certain amount of sense since when you speak about cyclops, you speak about group of creatures that ranging from very definition of masculine to the brutes that has no redeeming qualities (ask Odysseus).

Gave them Mono-eyed designation so far works, if only because all members we see so far tend to be nicer, if a bit shy at times. Oh, and all cute girls, too.

I think Manako is actually based off a one-eyed youkai, which are noted to have rather childlike proportions.

This, basically. Basically it comes down to whether you use "cyclops" as a general term for any one-eyed being, or as a specific type of creature (i.e. the ones from Greek Mythology). In this case, it seems that Okayado went with the latter and had to come up with a new generic term. Which I guess makes sense as it gives him more freedom to come up with subtypes and such.

It could've gone either way really.

True, but my issue is that "Monoeye" is a rather awkward neologism. There's a reason why prefixes typically drop the ending vowel if the word they're being attached to starts with a vowel, after all. Granted, "Monoculate" and "Unoculate" (deriving from Latin monoculus and unoculus, respectively, and following the etymological structure of "Primate" and "Ungulate") are just as awkward-sounding, if not moreso.

I just chalk it up to Gratuitous English. As far as I can tell, the guy isn't fluent in English and probably wouldn't be able to judge whether the term is all that awkward. That said, I don't really find it all that weird-sounding either. At least not any moreso than any other term he could've used.

@Japanese Teeth the raws of chapter 44 are available in Japanese and Korean, but it hasn't been translated yet. I can't link to the hosting sites but I think I can link to a summary thread on Reddit here.

I don't see (heh) what's the problem with "cyclops" and "monoeye". Usually "cyclops" is used to describe the giant brutes from Greek mythology, so it obviously doesn't work with the shy and delicate Manako. It makes sense then that Cyclops in the Monmusu universe are a subspecies of giant girls.

That said, it's interesting how, in Okayado's designs, the bigger you are the mellower and shyer you are (Cathyl is a borderline example). I wonder how nasty and cruel Cott and Ton actually are...

Cott and Ton are probably pretty chill; they seem mischievious, but they are vegetables, after all.

I'll have to check out that summary thread. I really want to get my hands on the raws (and if I do I can start translating).

Ah, so these are the new characters getting introduced then. If I have one gripe with this manga, its that Okayado really needs to come up with more interesting names. I mean, Suu, Papi, and Mero are alright, but a centaur named "Centorea"? Come on man, you can do better than that.

Anyway, I wonder when we're going to get another Lala chapter. It feels like it's been forever since she got any focus.

Also Youkai Shoujo has a pretty high WTF quotient.
