The Harry Potter image is a huge improvement.

The Disney one isn't an example. One of them has to be a girl.

If the Harry Potter sketch is JAFAAC, how is a picture of the same characters from the Harry Potter films any less so?

It's skirting JAFAAC territory, but I think this is a case where, provided we can't find a pic that actually refers to the three as the trope name or something similar, an illustration will have to suffice. I much prefer the Dan/Rupert/Emma pic to the current, at any rate, although my preference would be to find a more recent one of them.

JAFAAC means "you won't understand what the picture shows unless you recognize the character." The Harry Potter picture 3 high-school friends that aren't all the same gender, that shows the entire trope.

"A Power Trio of best friends, high school or middle school age..." That is totally communicated by the image. There are elements that are not communicated (character-type composition of trio, mainly) but like 75% ain't bad.

@Shadow Hog Because the drawing wasn't very clear. I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter, but I can at least recognize the main characters. In that image I could hardly tell who it was. They weren't wearing their Hogwarts clothes and it was very hard to make out the glasses. And most people can recognize the film version of the characters better then a sketch anyways.

@abk0100 Can we really tell if one of them is a girl? It's kind of ambiguous.

It at least needs a clearer picture of the three of them. Like the one in the OP.

^I believe Fast Eddie wanted to limit the number of anime pics, and I don't think those show the same closeness that the Harry Potter pic does.

[up][up] Good enough for Image Links, but I much prefer the HP pic for the main page.

Following with the Harry Potter theme of suggestions, why not this? I think it gets the message across:

The one in the middle is clearly The Hero since he's in the middle, the guy standing really close next to him with a dopey grin is The Lancer and Plucky Comic Relief, while the girl slightly separate from the other two with the books is The Chick and The Smart Guy.
