Didn't we just have this discussion...?
I dunno, I think Mario has enough pop culture saturation that most people are familiar with warp zones. Add in how the current level is at the top of the screen, and is clearly larger than where the warp zone would take you...
Keep Until Better Image Suggested

Moon◊Motion to pull
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman. The point is that the image shows "the place where you have screwed up". It doesn't show trial and error. Indeed, Super Mario Bros doesn't run on t&e gameplay.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Wow, this could've been done in the old thread.

Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels kind of do, though. There are a lot of "gotcha" moments that its immediate predecessor and successor didn't have - this is one of them.
Moon◊"Kind of" means it's not a good example of the trope.
The gameplay of SMB:TLL relies on difficult jumps, lots of enemies, difficult jumps, time limits, difficult jumps, a low amount of lives, and difficult jumps. The gameplay is horrendously difficult, but it's fair and doesn't need "gotchas". This is not IWBTG, after all.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Boomp.
I don't find this clear at all. Seconding the motion to pull, for what that's worth.
Pretentious quote || In-joke from fandom you've never heard of || Shameless self-promotion || Something weird you'll habituate toI watched a Let's Play for an amatuer RPG that had the worst method of Trial and Error gameplay I've ever seen. It was a series of "pick right or left" or "pick right, left, or up" choices, where if you picked the wrong one, you started all over from the beginning, cutscene included.
If I can find the video again or the game, would a selection of three screenshots from that work, you think?
And as an aside, the L Pers reaction after the 10th time he started over was classic (and hilarious) Angrish.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.That sounds like The Impossible Quiz with added cut scenes
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Warp Zones that go backwards with a pit are a great example of Trial and Error Game play. The problem is not everyone may know they are looking at a warp zone that goes backwards.
I still think it can be kept until a better one is found since it is otherwise a good example.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack
Okay, so Mario has a pipe that warps him to level one. That's not a very good example. Unless you're familiar with the original SMB it's not even clear what the image means.
What we'd need is something like three identical passages, two of which kill you.
