Banner Saga was always supposed to be episodic game.

Indeed, but parts 2 and 3 were dependent on how well part 1 performed. Which is to say that they weren't guaranteed, so confirmation is nice!

Bought a few days ago after reading a Steam recommendation by Wagrid. Just defeated Bellower on the fourth try.

Well. That was not a happy ending. I suspect that's inevitable—world's still ending, mysterious darkness, even Bellower will eventually come back—but still wonder about the potential impact of certain decisions near the end. Rook or one of the other archers firing the arrow instead of Alette, keeping the horn Macguffin instead of trading for food, trying for a second piece of silver from the godstone, which things you get done in the city before the final battle, etc.)

Lost a lot of characters and never even encountered the second spearman, so I'll replay at some point. Hope this absurd lawsuit goes away and the second episode is even better.

Full tally of the dead/otherwise not present:

  • Fasolt— died offscreen when I took too long to destroy the bridge
  • Alette— killed by Bellower
  • Egil— saved Alette from a dredge mace to the head
  • Ekkill— left without weapons or supplies on the ice plains
  • Hogun— died after I won a charge, then tried to keep cutting down dredge and lost (which happened every time but twice, you'd think I'd have learned my lesson. At least he was the only permanent casualty from it.)
  • Onef— killed by Alette after the betrayal. Not sure what saved Oddleif, since apparently she can die here?
  • Yrsa— vanished after I let her set a forest fire
  • Tryggvi— only know this guy exists from this thread, where is he?

Tryggvi is a pre-order bonus.

What horn McGuffin?

And yeah, I forgot about getting my people settled in in Boersgard. I lost like 80 because a ton of the caravan decided to go their own way.

In my case I was out of supplies, so I took looking for those as a priority. Eventually Oddleif found a guy willing to trade food at a reasonable price if we retrieved an old horn stolen from him (because it supposedly belonged to his grandfather, IIRC). Once you kill the thugs, you have the option of keeping the ancient, finely made, and probably magical artifact for yourself. Oddleif was disappointed when I didn't.

Ah. I don't think that ever happened to me.

It was awesome how it seemed to have a hold on everyone too (the guys guarding it were pretty weak, so were probably starving while fawning over it).

Haven't watched it, but the number of comments to the effect of "thanks for saving me from buying this!" make it sound pretty negative...

Tl;dw, they liked the artwork but found the story and characters boring as hell, and the turn-based combat was okay but not enough to keep their interest. Which was pretty much my experience with the game, as well.

Well, it looks like they didn't really pay attention to the story if they site the travel as aimless.

Oh yes. I loved the story and characters. The turn-based combat was kind of wonky but eh.

Picked up the game during the Steam Sale. Currently starting chapter 5 (so, in Einartoft trying to figure out what to do with that damn bridge). Casualties so far are Gunnulf to an event, and Ludin at Ridgehorn. Caravan morale is consistently low, but haven't run out of supplies at any point.

This game kicks my ass. I have yet to make it past the Bridge. But I still enjoy it and play it from time to time.

I beat it on Easy, and the last fight only just.

I'm also surprised I haven't seen this around here yet.
