Really want to buy some new music, but can't decide what to get... I love MUSE, pink floyd, pendulum, early radiohead and M83 amongst others (yeah yeah mainstream, I know). Seeing as you guys tend to have the best music taste around, I thought I'd ask here!

We have a recommendations thread called "Gateway Albums". You're more likely to get a response if you post there.

I also highly recommend Grooveshark as a way to preview albums before buying.

Anyway, Starflyer 59. Start with The Fashion Focus.

I didn't write any of that.

In addition to the Gateway albums thread, there's also this thread.

In general though since you like Pink Floyd, try Tales of Mystery and Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project, Fragile and Close to the Edge by Yes, In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson and Octopus by Gentle Giant.

If you want something outside of what you listen to, try Blush Music by Woven Hand, Folklore by 16 Horsepower and The Black Light by Calexico.

Also, Cat Steven's Mona Bone Jakon is a great album.

It's probably a bit more art rock than the examples you suggested, but The Apples In Stereo's always a good bet. I've only listened to two of their albums (both really good), though, New Magnetic Wonder and Fun Trick Noisemaker (the latter being a bit more psychedelic and experimental and the former being a bit more pop-oriented).

Also, since it seems like prog rock might be good for you, I highly suggest Electric Light Orchestra. Out of the albums of theirs I've heard thus far, I'd best recommend for the prog rock lover On the Third Day and Out of the Blue (the latter particularly because of the Concerto for a Rainy Day, a suite of songs that tie into each other greatly). Of course, my favorite album of ELO's is A New World Record, so I'd recommend that as well. You might know the song "Do Ya" from it (it's been in a lot of car commercials, I believe, and Grand Theft Auto IV).

Cheers for the advice guys, I already listen to and enjoy ELO and had a look at a few others - can anyone tell me anything about Placebo? Plus I might well look into The Apples, they sound quite cool.
