If you follow roguelikes, you may have heard of this: it used to be a *band, and it recently won Roguelike of the Year for the second time in a row.

If you don't follow roguelikes, it's a lot easier to get into than many examples of the genre. The graphics are existent, which is more than many can say, the learning curve is not nearly as steep as in some roguelikes, and the basic tough melee fighter is much more interesting than usual.

This is the website, the download page is here.

I recently managed to unlock all the classes. I haven't played most of them too deeply, but so far my favorite is the Temporal Warden (it's probably not a coincidence that a TW was also the character I got farthest with). Some of them I always feel uncomfortable with, like I don't really have enough abilities, even as I keep managing to progress. Brawler, Marauder, and Shadowblade are pretty big offenders in that respect. Who else has played it, and how have you been doing?

Hmmm...I remember my college roommate way back(musta been 5 years now?) tried to get me into a roguelike called TOME, except that game was set in Middle Earth

This has nothing to do with that?

Oh and TW is OP right now, especially with Spin Fate...it'll get nerf next beta...

[up][up] Nominally, it's a different version of the game. In a practical sense, it's a complete overhaul, and the only similarities are very, very broad.

[up] Yeah, one of the big ones is Spin Fate losing the defense bonus. It's still a very fun class.

So I saw this thread yesterday, and tried the game out. I had some thoughts, but every time I exit my game they're overwritten by "Holy crap, dat loading screen."

Is it meaningful in any way that the download page still describes this version as a beta? (Or is this the Dwarf Fortress kind of beta, where it's never actually done?)

So I decided to start playing this game.

Damn, it kind of runs slowly on my laptop. There's a slight lag before doing anything.

Ah well, it's pretty damn fun, anyway. I'm enjoying my Arcane Warrior.

[up][up]It's not at a Dwarf Fortress level of continuous development, but it is still in that mode. There are bugs; many are fixed in the bugfix addon and others are being worked on for the next version.

[up] Apparently the next version runs a lot faster.

Not sure if I want to try this one =/

I remember playing To ME 2 (the one set in Middle Earth) and enjoying it, but I still don't think that it's as good as Nethack.

Well the current version is VERY different from TOME 2...

Although I don't like Net Hack...at all...despite it being the first Roguelike I played...

Well, does anyone know whether it is still possible to get To ME 2? I took a look around, but I haven't been able to find it recently =/

I've never played ToME 2, but 4 seems to be really cool.

I'll admit, I stated playing pretty much solely because the first post of this topic mentioned Temporal Warden as a character class. tongue

Temporal Warden is one of the three coolest classes in the game, along with Paradox Mages and Mindslayers. It's a shame they're all so hard to unlock. (It's possible to cheat to unlock them, though.)

TW unlock is not that hard...neither is Paradox Mage...

Mindslayer is though...Subject Z is a PITA for several versions now...good thing I unlocked it before Shadowblade buff...

Other darn hard to unlock classes include Corruptor, Doomed, Necromancer (if you don't know that not opening the tombstones before facing the boss will unleash hordes of monsters you need to fight too), and some others...

I'm finding Alchemist to be a pretty damn awesome class. I get to throw bombs, enchant my armor with gems, AND get a free tank? Nice!

I still want to unlock the chronomancy classes, though...

Especially because to get the paradox mage, you apparently have to be killed by yourself. That makes me giggle.

So to become a paradox mage you have to cast a suicidal spell? Or is there time shenanigans involved?

[up][up][up] Well, TW and PM aren't hard unlocks in a "oh, I have this one class left to get" sort of way, they're hard in a "this class is awesome and one of the things you really need to try right away" way. Most newcomers aren't going to be able to beat the Daikara, much less the Rift.

[up]Time shenanigans. If you play a Temporal Warden, at one point you are confronted by your future self, who attacks you. If they kill you, they disappear and you don't lose a life or anything - because, of course, if you die you can't later come back and kill yourself. So it just makes a temporal rift that someone else has is going to have to deal with.

I like it so far, but I'm wondering who on Earth plays this in Roguelike mode. Half the fun comes from taking on monsters twice your level and trying not to die, and having multiple lives keeps your luck from running out too quickly. (Then again, even with multiple lives, it feels obligatory to clear out dungeons you're already overleveled for so you can pick up useful equipment and make your life easier in the later dungeons.)

I play it in roguelike mode because I can't fathom a roguelike where you can recover from death*

. Feels like it cheapens the experience somehow.

Also, I like pain.

Somebody on the official forums decided to go through the vault of registered characters, take a random sample of high-level ones, and tally up what talents they had at what level.

The results are interesting.

Notable facts:
Dwarfs are the most common race; nearly everyone maxes Power is Money because it is an amazing talent. Cornacs are second. Skeletons are third, and their racial tree is almost always close to maxed.
Alchemists are the most common class. All of them unlock Advanced Golemancy; only three failed to max the first three bomb talents: two of them had no points in bomb talents at all, and the last had them at 4-5-5.
If you unlock Spell/Temporal, you are going to max out Essence of Speed and you are probably only going to take the other talents as prerequisites.
Temporal Wardens almost always max Weapon Folding, Strength of Purpose, Damage Deflection, and Spin Fate, and get Dimensional Step up to at least 4.
Bow Archers are a lot more common than Sling Archers. You can tell which one an archer is by whether they have Bow Mastery or Sling Mastery maxed - and they will definitely have one maxed. They will also put 5 points into Aim and Steady Shot.
All 8 of the summoners in the sample unlocked both Summoning (augmentation) and Summoning (advanced).
There were no Doomed in the sample - in fact there were no Doomed that could have been in the sample at all. In part, this is because they are so hard to unlock, but still.

It amuses me that two of the four rogues who reached level 30 didn't put a single point into stealth. The blink tank build has its advantages over the "If they see you, you're dead" build.

(It also disappoints me that there were only four of them. Rogues are fun, so I was kind of hoping they wouldn't suck.)
