2. Which is the definitive version of this to play, and which version should I avoid?
3. Are said best versions available for relatively cheap?
4. How's Yoshis Story?

  • 1. You'd be missing out on one of the best plattformers ever. If you liked Super Mario World, then I suppose you will like Yoshis Island too. ^^
  • 2. I'd say that the definitive version of YI is the GBA one. Even though it's music is of inferiour soundquality (but that's more of a hardware-problem, I think) and the graphics are a bit brighter to compensate for the original GBA's lack of a backlight compared to the SNES-original, the GBA-version got several new bonus-levels and really provides from being portable.
  • 3. I guess the GBA-version is available pretty cheap on Amazon and such. Can't tell 'ya anything about the SNES-version on Amazon and eBay, though.
  • 4. Yoshis Story... eh, it's alright, I guess, but if you want it, you should not go into the game expecting it to be of equal or better quality than Yoshis Island.

Yoshi Story is generally the gameplay of Yoshi's Island but dumbed down a bit. It's a good game, but sometimes you might find yourself wishing you could play something more challenging and more crisply designed. That's where Yoshi's Island comes in.

1. Depends how much you like platformers. YI is pretty good, but it's got some problems that your benevolence towards will probably depend on how much you like platformers. The slightly slippery controls, for example, and the lack of variation in environment types (when you break it down, the game really only has four: Field, Cave, Castle, Ice). Not to mention the Guide Dang It! nature of the way it hides some of its collectibles. As controls are something I'm extremely picky about in platformers, I've never quite forgiven Yoshi's slightly awkward momentum in this game, but it's a pretty big YMMV thing.

2. As far as I know, they're all good. And hey! The GBA version does indeed have some new levels. (But yeah, the DS version is, in fact, a sequel. I like the DS version for having slightly more managable controls and because I like the "partner baby" mechanic, but it gets even more stupid hard than the original near the end.)

3. If you have a 3DS, I think the GBA version is on the VC for pretty cheap. I think it's on the Wii VC too. And even the physical GBA cart is pretty cheap, too!

4. I quite like it. It may not be as difficult (unless you go for all melons, in which case, prepare for pain), but I think it's worth it solely for the astoundingly good atmosphere the graphics and music provide. It unfortunately still suffers from YI's Guide Dang It! collectible placement in some of the later levels, but like its predecessor, it's a really pretty game. I think it's worth it just for the sight-seeing.

If you have a 3DS, I think the GBA version is on the VC for pretty cheap. I think it's on the Wii VC too.

Neither of these are true. It's not on the Wii VC at all, and it's only available on 3DS to those who bought the system before the price drop.

1: It's a masterpiece of visual design, offers an insane ammount of content and offers some of the tightest controls and level design to come from the Mario series, including the "main" games.

I like it.

2: The GBA version has more levels, but due to the nature of the portable display, the GBA's sound chip and toned down effects, it lacks some of the aesthetic quality of the original. depends on what you want.

4: It's a baby game for babies that's oddly still somewhat amusing and charming. Though I wouldn't pay more than 10$ for it... better than fucking YIDS at any rate.

  • 1: You're missing out a lot! Easily one of the best platformers I've ever played.
  • 2: Personally, I'd play the SNES version if possible, but that's mostly because I find the Yoshis Story sounds added to the GBA version to be incredibly distracting and annoying. Also, if you have a friend watching you play, he can compete with you in the minigames involving Bandit.
  • 3: The SNES version probably isn't that cheap looking on eBay, like most SNES games (and especially since it uses the Super FX GSU-2 co-processor), but there's always the chance that you can find it dirt cheap at a yard sale, thrift store, or pawn shop. By contrast, the GBA version may be easier and cheaper to find, and the 3DS release is based on the GBA version.
  • 4: I was very disappointed by Yoshis Story, to say the least. Lacked a lot of the charm of Yoshis Island, and the level select options were irritatingly limiting, too. The only thing I consider an improvement over Yoshis Island is that you have free aim with egg throwing.

Oh, and before I forget, you can't mention Yoshis Island without mentioning this infamous level.

Yoshi island...

One of the best games one the SNES, thats for sure. It just has something... charming on it, I cant quite say what it is, but a very good game by itself, and I may get killed for saying this, but IMO its even better than super mario world (both games are VERY good, but SMW lacked the charm that YI had... somehow).

As for Yoshi story... its an okayish game, enjoyable, but it has NOTHING on YI. The dificulty and just about ever aspect of the game got turned down for whatever reason, it just not the same... but its still a good game by itself, if a bit short.

Dont own a DS so I cant say much about YI DS

Yoshi's Island is definitely a great game. Get the SNES version if you can. Yoshi's Story... eh... It's an okay game. But this game was designed for kids, and it shows.

Yoshi's Island DS? Music is rather lackluster, but holy shit it's a lot more difficult than Yoshi's Island. The later levels are absolutely merciless. They require a ton of crazy manuevers and your lives will be eaten away like crazy. I am not even exaggerating with the Platform Hell pothole And then there's the Extra and Secret levels... All in all, it was an okay experience. If you're looking for a difficult experience, I guess you can get Yoshi's Island DS, but I didn't really like it. It was pretty boring and lackluster.

The GBA version of Yoshi's Island is a jerk for keeping track of the number of times when you died and throwing them at you after you get 100% completion. Not sure if that was in the SNES version or not.

Holy fuck this game is godly.

My one complaint: The physics and inertia is as finicky as Super Mario Bros 2.

I prefer my GBA version on emulator. Right as rain. SNES version doesn't have more fitting sound effects like Yoshi's sounds, and it lags

I also have a physical GBA cartridge, but the memory went poof

[up][up][up]: Those hyper-finicky physics are the reason I can't love this game as much as everyone else does. Yoshi has difficulty stopping, the flutter-jump physics are a little bit strange, and I've never felt comfortable with them. I feel like a number of the game's most irritating moments are only so because of the controls, and Yoshi's momentum, and that makes me feel cheated.

I mean, I still love the game, don't get me wrong, but it's not in my top 5 2-D platformers. Maybe not even my top 10. I think it might be a combination of me being very sensitive about platformers and their flaws, and a little bit og Hype Backlash.
