So, like, what's up with how Mewtwo comes before Mew in the Pokedex.

Seriously, though, it's the same reason "new" mons are being "discovered" with each new Gen, despite those mons being native to their respective regions, with the people of that region recognizing them immediately.

But it's the same region. From an in-universe perspective, why would they deliberately put Mewtwo before Mew...?

Because they (GameFreak) came up with Mew later? Because the scientists only discovered a fossil of Mew from which they cloned Mewtwo before they encountered Mew in the flesh and recorded it in the Pokedex? You got me.

At first, I was like, "Mewtwo has a birthday?", then I saw that diary entry from Red/Blue and I was like, "Wait...(looks at date) son of a bitch!"

I bet Mew is nice.

Mew is actually a clone-phobic jerk in the Japanese version of the first Pokemon movie. xD The relevant bit — "Likewise, Mew's speech to Mewtwo is different in the Japanese version. In the English version, Mew gives a speech about how real strength comes from the heart, whereas in the Japanese version, Mew declares that all unnatural life (ie, clones) are inferior to the originals, and thus should perish."

Because the tone of that movie was originally quite different from what 4Kids made it into, and it never really made much sense to begin with for Mew to be all Pure Virtuous Hero when every other Pokemon on its side was fighting to the death with its opposite because of what they were. =/

The Japanese version was more shades-of-grey than black-and-white, with Mewtwo being an Anti-Villain in the line of Frankenstein's Monster. The US release was dumbed down a lot, which is kind of saying something given that it's a Pokemon movie. =P

They completely excised the Birth of Mewtwo (Myuutsuu to Ai) segment in the theatrical and VHS releases, which kind of destroyed Mewtwo's characterization and got rid of some (rather heartbreaking) foreshadowing for the Deus ex Machina. I think they put it in the DVD release of Mewtwo Returns, but I ended up with the VHS and it wasn't there (...I did get to see the English dub of it at a friend's house on the DVD and attempted the "record it on a VHS" trick, but it didn't work very well). =(

Mewtwo Returns got all sorts of stuff past the radar, though. XD Kind of surprising for 4Kids, really.

Well, I guess that Mew is childlike, and children are evil, so...

You know, I think that alternate history thing I posted is less creepy / messed up than Mew being an evil bastard. That's just not right.

Come to think about it, the original unedited version of the first Pokemon movie was, in my opinion, a rather thought-provoking tale of the ethical issues of cloning. it dealt with the themes of Cloning Blues, Fantastic Racism, and even existential crisis, what with Mewtwo and the whole not created by God thing.

Too bad 4kids dumbed it down into a really stupid parody of itself.
