What song does this example refer to?

Removed this example from "Dear John" Letter for the moment:

• Surprisingly, the famous country song "Dear John" is about a man receiving a letter from his wife begging him to come home. (The 1980's one, not the Taylor Swift one.)

I have no idea which of the dozens of songs with this title this is supposed to be. Even specifying the decade doesn't really help me. Does anyone know which "Dear John" is the "famous" song?

It MIGHT be this... It's from 1980, but I don't know the song or the artist, so I can't confirm it.

There's also all these, but I doubt you want to wade through all of them.
