So you keep saying and so I've already demonstrated is false.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.- Me and several other independent sources on the internet and authorities on media.
- Sure. Me Love You Long Time more closely fits this trope, though, as it's about a white-man-asian-woman relationship that is unequal. So far, MLYLT is the best name (in my opinion) which sums up that the woman is supposed to be: A) most likely uneducated B) most likely an immigrant (as indicated by thick accent) C) either submissive (as the dialogue suggest) and/or D) hypersexual (as the dialogue ALSO suggests).
- So is Where da White Women At? and several other trope names. I still feel that we have to make exceptions sometimes, because that is occasionally the best way to be Clear Concise And Witty.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.- What is there to interpret? They outright said it.
- No one said all asian sex workers. This trope is specifically an asian sex worker with a white guy. And even then "asian hooker" is a stereotype. Again, this is outright SAID. And in case that still isn't clear enough, here's another site that references it: http://anbmsource.com/node/592. And another: http://abagond.wordpress.com/2010/11/18/stereotypes-about-east-asian-women/
- Then let the crowner or a mod call it. That's their job.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.1. Then show me some counter references. I am specifically sourcing examples where fans, media analysts, and writers are stating that an asian hooker in media is both a stereotype AND a trope in relation to their relationship with white men. So what's your counter-source?
3. Let a mod or a crowner decide what to do with the title. That is all.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. And again, I just provided several links which definitively showed that what you said is incorrect.
But yeah, believe what you want. The crowner might agree with you.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Me Love You Long Time is a terrible name for a trope that has Madame Butterfly as an example. It has some hope as the name of a trope about low-rent Asian prostitutes, although that's still a minefield.
That's ridiculous. We had to create an entire new rule for the wiki because people were making frivolous arguments to rename tropes with perfectly good names.
Again, a crowner will settle things, one way or another.
I think that, because of the movie, Me Love You Long Time has strong connotations of prostitution and therefore should be a redirect to the newly proposed Asian Hooker Stereotype, not to a more general trope about how Asian women get shipped with White men.
I don't personally have any strong connotations for Where da White Women At? but it sounds like something that probably does have strong connotations for people who watch / read the sort of fiction where it comes up. Again, probably not the appropriate name for a general trope about Black men with White women.
I might agree with the "has stronger connotations to a hooker" with the caveat that it still hits more points of relevance with this trope. In fact, that trope should be called Asian Sex Worker instead, because not all examples are going to be outright hookers.
I think the general trope should have a neutral name (although Pinkerton And Butterfly calls to my character named trope loving heart), should mention Orientalism, and subsequently asian sex workers stereotypes, asian bride stereotypes, asian harem stereotypes, yellow fever (sexual slang) and yellow fever stereotypes, implied power inequalities, and the relative value of white masculinity and Asian femininity versus the inverse.
Concur with Asian Sex Worker being a better name for that trope than Asian Hooker(Stereotype). I'm still really fuzzy on what "this trope" is beyond "Asian woman shipped with White man" so I can't comment on the rest of it.
Agree overall (also, we should write up Orientalism as a trope, eh?), but not in a list like that, which my jaded brain wants to parse as word salad from porn spam. Is "Pinkerton And Butterfly" a reference to Madame Butterfly? I think that that might be a little too obscure nowadays, alas.

Oh, that's right: We don't have a page on Orientalism yet! Good idea, lets start it!
How about we just call for a vote to restore the former name and work on the new pages of 'Asian Hooker' and 'Orientalism'?
I'm guessing the latter builds on eddie sai's cultural history thesis idea thing, light as it was on the history. Attitudes change over the space of hundreds of years, yet 'Orientalism' is supposed to have been a consistent attitude? Don't think so. Anyhoo, at least he started a discussion over it... and oh dear I'm rambling.
It's surprising we don't have something on him and his ideas already, considering we're a cultural index archive... thing-place-people.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest. — Mark TwainMe Love You Long Time sounds good. I ave never seen the movie, but I knew what it was the moment I read it. Same thing with Where Da White Woman At.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Do you have evidence of that misuse? Especially since prostitution is part of this trope?
edited 26th Feb '12 4:21:22 PM by KingZeal
Yep. 50-wick check shows half misuse from that name. Also from this thread:
The new and old names for this trope sound like they're about completely different things.
I've never seen the movie and I thought it was about Asian hookers initially.
Me Love You Long Time is a terrible name for a trope that has Madame Butterfly as an example.
And me.
Maybe there is a little kernel of prostitution mixed in the trope but it is not nearly enough for it to be named that.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. Most of the examples in question still got the trope right (Asian hooker propositioning white men). Also, most tropers still got the usage right even if some got it wrong.
We still need a better suggestion if you're that convinced.
