No love? Recently caught up on the series so far and seriously enjoying it. Its like Mad Men without the annoying smug tossers who populate that series (seriously, I want to punch every main character in the face) and with beautiful women instead.

I saw an episode of Pan Am. I found it pretty interesting how it touches on the Cold War, and it shows an era of airplanes long gone. I've heard how there once a time when planes were almost like resorts, and there was luxury to go around. Of course, if that's true, then it obviously disappeared. Nowadays, airplane flights are so...soulless that I wouldn't be surprised if people stopped taking the plane altogether!

Do they have Juan Trippe appearing on the show? Baldwin played him in the Scorsese movie.

[up]He hasn't appeared yet, but he might in the future.

I really like the aircraft/airport/foreign city settings.

Oh, yeah, and this show takes place in the early 1960s. As a result, Values Dissonance pops up...or should I say Deliberate Values Dissonance?

Its definitely deliberate. The episode where the black sailor gets assaulted for going out with one of the white, blonde stewardesses? Subtle as a sledgehammer.

Back off a bit.

There is some major actor stuff going on in this series.

Not kidding. I've been to the 60's—crusty old fuck that I am—and I have to tell you to watch the acting. The 60's stuff is right. Not anvilicious, just correct.

Not sure I'm doing this right. Watch the people, not the history.

I didn't live in the 1960s, but I'm sure that's just how it was back then. There was no such thing as political correctness at that time. If there was prejudice, sexism or racism at that time, it could be displayed openly and people apparently had to live with it! As a saying goes, you just had to be there!

I've been to the 80's.

Hee. I'm using that in conversation.

Oh I'm not saying it was inaccurate. I'm just saying there's a lot of Deliberate Values Dissonance used on purpose and to great effect.

The spy storyline is dragging a bit though. That whole thing with Kate and her Russian contact in the last ep was a bit silly. I like Ted's new closet lesbian fiancee though.

I would advise you to take a look at the Out of Order trope. I'm willing to betcha that Pan Am is gonna be chewed up and spat out by the network! sad

I know I'm the one adding the trope to work page.

I hope not, I'm really enjoying it, its a guilty pleasure.

...*necros*

The series has just started its showing in Germany, and by way of sleeplessness I watched an episode. Coincidentally it was the episode set in Berlin and something made me chuckle.

I get that Colette was trying to make everyone uncomfortable with singing the first stanza of the Deutschlandlied. The thing is...it was actually quite appropiate.

The saying of the song, in its original meaning, is "we are Germans above else", referring to the time when 'Germany' was a big collection of small states. The song was meant for unification and brotherhood among all that was 'Germany'. Which was the reason the Weimar Republic (not the Nazis) made it the National Anthem.

And she sung it in Berlin, at a time where Germany was divided again. So, quite fitting.

Maybe she should have gone with the Horst Wessel lied...

Also, maybe I did miss it, but why did no body mention the fact that 6 months earlier an treaty of french-german friendship was signed?
