I propose the picture used throughout this video.

Or would that work better on Space Brasília instead?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Could you please explain how Minas Tirith is not this trope? Because it is listed as an example of the trope.

I'm not sure that's the best picture to communicated this, but still, It would be nice if you expand on your argument.

Also, I'm not getting anything from your suggested replacement other that "A futuristic looking white city instead of a fantasy looking white city."

Well the description honestly makes it hard to make out the full definition. But even accepting it as an example, it's too small here, while the proposal at least shows a detailed cross section.

The OP suggestion could work for either trope. There's also Asgard.

I think the Minas Tirith image is extremely good and fitting.

Good example, bad pic...a better pic is needed if we stick with it.

I think what makes the image good is an element missing from all the suggested replacements: it contrasts the "shining city" with the evil it protects the world from. Which is definitive. "City that is shining" is not.

That's buried in there, and does not suggest that is the primary element of this trope.

Didn't say anything about that being primary. That's just one facet of why I think it's the best so far.

[up]Well perhaps I misread what you wrote about "definitive". Anyway, we should sort out the definition (and then the mess definition) on TRS before we decide what makes the best picture.

"Definitive" means "part of the definition". It is often used to mean "the only part", but, I thought the context made it clear that isn't what I meant. Sorry.

This thread is titled "Just because Minas Tirith is white doesn't make it this trope"; there are lots of other reasons that is a good example, and many of them are actually depicted in that image. Shafts of sunlight and everything. Some elements are not. Others are probably not picturable.

Well it's also blurry, and makes the city seem like a fancy castle or fort.

It is a fancy castle/fort. Not mutually exclusive.

Okay, I mean too small to also be a city.

I think the image is good—there's a big shining light coming down on this shiny white city with an evil, dark background juxtaposing it.

But, it is a bit small, this is true.

Please elaborate on "a bit small", not sure what that means or why that's bad, exactly.

It doesn't really stand out as a city. It's not the focus of the image. And I don't think it's acceptable that it looks like just a fort. It must look like a place where people live.

Ok. I think none of those is true*

, but also I think the image speaks for itself in the "best picture so far" department. Does anyone have a suggestion for something better?

Yeah, I dunno if the previous image of Minas Tirith worked or not, but I think the current is pretty great. It's white, it's shiny, it's got the rays of light coming down on it, and having Mordor looming in the background nicely emphasizes the whole "beacon of hope". It'd be nice if it was a bit higher res, though.
