... Oh. Eheheh, now I understand why said what you said. To be honest, I don't see his mission that often or early, and never had much trouble with it (more often than not, I find myself with at least a couple of decent MEC Troopers, the better to deal with the dreaded Sectopod).

No, Imca, that is not okay.

Van Doorn's awesomely cheesy voice acting is what makes the character. It's the single reason why he has gained memetic status within the XCOM fandom. In a sense, Van Doorn is his voice.

I'm gonna have to ask you to turn in your green turtleneck and Vigilo Confido patch.

I don't like Van Doorn because he thinks it's smart to charge into the middle of the enemy without a weapon. In fact, his lone surviving subordinate doesn't even have a gun (or if he does, he never provides that covering fire he promised). You know what? I'm starting to see just why XCOM needed to come bail those idiots out. tongue

Huh, Archon is rather bling/angelic in design. Appropriate, but didn't expect human version of floater be less frankenstein in appearance while still being pretty horrific xD

... Uh, the guy didn't charge into the middle of the enemy without a weapon. His convoy was caught in an ambush, and he was stranded away from the only surviving soldier (at least, the only one to survive by the time XCOM arrives).

To quote the mission description: "Reports indicate a UN official and his associates were caught in the middle of an alien attack in country. If this official is killed or abducted by the aliens, it would undoubtedly spread panic and reduce the effectiveness of XCOM. We need a squad of your soldiers to escort the target safely to the extraction point."

And to quote what I assume to be Central's mission-start dialogue: "UN official Peter Van Doorn and his entourage were caught in an explosion that decimated a nearby bridge, and we're picking up hostiles converging on the area. We need you to confirm Mr. Van Doorn is still alive, and bring him back safe before the whole place is overrun."

So yeah, you seem to be misremembering things.

Speaking of VIPs, I just escorted Sgt. Carlock and discovered these guys have not only 0 aim, but also 0 will (or 5 will if you have the Star of Terra medal, which also applies to them).

Nope. While it's true that he was caught in an ambush, the surviving soldier explicitly states that Van Doorn went back in to help his men. Which sounds all cool and valourous, except he is a VIP, who just charged back into the fray without a weapon to help soldiers whose job is to protect him. So he's stranded, unarmed, in the middle of a bunch of Sectoids. If he hadn't been a moron, let his escorts do their job, and stuck to a safe place, XCOM could have extracted him as soon as they touched down.

Then, on the way out, the surviving soldier does jack shit to cover Van Doorn's escape. Guess we know how that guy survived when the rest of the entourage didn't.

I wonder how different the Ethereals are gonna be with human dna.

I also wonder if The Bureau will be rendered definitively non-canon.

[up]They might not want to change themselves; after all, surely with all the genetic engineering we've seen them get up to, if they wanted to alter their form, they could.

We don't exactly what the Ethereals want, just know that apparently humans are integral to it. The Bureau offered one suggestion, and honestly it's one of the few things from that game that I hope does get brought over.

Its valorous, some just think its stupid. I hold no opinion myself.

Vuther: Because he's important enough that if he gets captured or killed trying to pull that crap, not only is the world placed at a disadvantage, but he's also basically pissing on his soldiers' sacrifice. And if XCOM is unable to save him, that's exactly what happens.

Spirit: Really? Hmmm, maybe I'll have to make more of an effort to get and play through the Bureau. >.>

Still seems to fit the bill to me.

valorous

[val-er-uh s]

adjective

1.having valor; courageous; valiant; brave.

valor

[val-er]

noun

1. boldness or determination in facing great danger, especially in battle; heroic courage; bravery

It also kinda sounded like everything went particularly haywire after the aliens blew up the bridge, which could of meant it would have looked a lot less crazy before that.

Plus, let's be honest. A person in the United Nations is automatically severely limited in their potential to do anything useful anyway. tongue

Effectively committing meaningless suicide is hardly heroic. Neither is indirectly screwing everyone else over.

As for the bridge, IIRC, it was the bridge going out that prompted Van Doorn to go back to try to help his troops.

Even though he's just UN, Bradford probably wouldn't have made such a big deal about Van Doorn if he wasn't actually important. I mean, this the organization where they, day-to-day have to decide to leave entire countries to burn.

[up][up] If him dying would have caused as much trouble as the Council said it would, apparently not.

Also, Van Doorn is a former soldier, likely either Dutch going by his name or Canadian by his accent. It makes perfect sense that he'd try to help his soldiers fight off the aliens.

Even if he did charge ahead unarmed, he probably figured he could pick up a weapon from one of his fallen soldiers. Either that or punch an alien and take their weapon.

[up] XCOM is a coordinated international response to the threat of an alien invasion. Who but the UN would be in a position of importance to an initiative like that?

XCOM 2 non-explosive cover destruction: I believe the Grenadier class video linked on the previous page mentions an ability called Cone of Fire (if I'm not mistaken) that is very similar to Collateral Damage, namely it damages enemies and destroys cover in the targeted area.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Nearing the end of my Normal Marathon playthrough (April 2016), I'm now assaulting battleships with a full-mimetic strike team (2 SS/ITZ snipers, 2 heavies, 1 support, 1 assault). I guess this should provide a good foretaste of XCOM 2 tactical...
